Ohio Police Chief Shoots Himself While Teaching Daughter Gun Safety

MONROE, Ohio  ?  Police in southwestern Ohio say a police chief mistakenly shot himself in the thigh after giving his daughter a gun safety lesson.

A police report says 54-year-old Middletown police Chief Greg Schwarber was preparing to clean his Glock .45-caliber pistol on Friday and didn't realize the gun was still loaded.

The report written by officers from neighboring Monroe says the bullet entered Schwarber's leg just above the knee.

When officers arrived, they found the chief lying on the floor with a towel covering his leg. Schwarber was taken to a hospital for treatment.

The hospital had no record of Schwarber being treated or admitted. A home phone number for him couldn't be found.

He seems to have remembered Rule number two: cover it up.

No, that would be never point/aim a firearm at anything you're not willing to destroy

No, Rule One is make sure a gun isn't loaded before you play with it.

Unloaded guns are safe, or at least safer than loaded ones.

Your Rule One is really Rule three.

Guns were created unloaded.

What is the ordinal number for the rule that a gun is always assumed to be loaded?

Depends on who's rules you're using. I use the NRA rules.

Well, I suppose that we should go with the NRA, as they play with guns more. But it seems to me that unloading a gun before giving a talk about gun safety is a really good idea. It's like turning off the engine before you change the oil or adjust the valves and stuff.

Ditto.  Though the ones I'm referring to are generally considered universal, as in every gun safety or gun handling course, I've attended, they were the 5 everyone was taught to start off with

1) Treat every weapon as if it were loaded
2) Do not point/aim your weapon at anything you're not willing to destroy
3) Be sure of your target and what's behind it
4) keep your finger off the trigger until you are intending to shoot
5) keep your firearm inaccesible to any unauthorized or untrained individual

If firearm owners were to adhere to thes 5 basic rules, 99.9% of all accidents would be eliminated

I think after I treated a weapon as if it were loaded, I would unload it before using it to demonstrate gun safety. That would also be safe, wouldn't it?

"I didn't know the gun was loaded" is a pretty lame excuse for anyone to have to make, even if they are a member of the NRA

It would be silly to try to drive a car with no instruction first , there are only a few that do.

How many people buy a gun assumeing that it is so simple that they need no training to use it?

Coincidentally I heard on the TV today that Plaxico Burrus, WR for the NY Giants, shot himself in the leg. I can't find anything on it so I don't know if it's true or not.

My mistake, it's Burress.

Apparently he was shot either by himself, or someone else.

=======================================
There are stupid people who are members of the NRA, just as there are smart ones.
There are both smart and stupid people who are not members.

If you were to shoot someone else while demonstrating gun safely, this could be both stupidity and manslaughter. Shooting yourself accidentally is just stupid, and perhaps also masochistic, but legal.
