Muslims Silence Critics By Robert Spencer

After a police raid Friday at Your Black Muslim Bakery in Oakland, bakery employee Devaughndre Broussard admitted to murdering Chauncey Bailey, the editor of the Oakland Post. Bailey was writing a series of investigative articles about the Bakery ? and that?s why, according to police, Broussard killed him.
Your Black Muslim Bakery is an outpost of the Nation of Islam, not of any orthodox Islamic sect, but in this murder Devaughndre Broussard has followed a pattern that some orthodox Muslims have also followed. Violent reprisal has long been an occupational hazard of those who dare to question or investigate Islamic groups or criticize Islamic practices. Filmmaker Theo van Gogh was brutally murdered in November 2004 by a Muslim who took exception to his criticism of the oppression of women in Islamic societies. In 1947, the Iranian lawyer Ahmad Kasravi was murdered in court by Islamic jihadists; Kasravi was there to defend himself against charges that he had attacked Islam.
Four years later, members of the same radical Muslim group, Fadayan-e Islam, assassinated Iranian Prime Minister Haji-Ali Razmara after a group of Muslim clerics issued a fatwa calling for his death. In 1992, the Egyptian writer Faraj Foda was murdered by Muslims enraged at his ?apostasy? from Islam ? another offense for which traditional Islamic law prescribes the death penalty. Foda?s countryman, the Nobel Prizewinning novelist Naguib Mahfouz, was stabbed in 1994 after accusations of blasphemy. And of course, there is the Iranian regime?s notorious death fatwa against Salman Rushdie.
Chauncey Bailey, moreover, is not the first person in the United States to have been murdered by a Muslim who didn?t like what he said. That distinction may belong to Rashad Khalifa, an unorthodox interpreter of the Qur?an who was murdered in Tucson, Arizona, in January 1990 ? probably by a member of the jihadist group Jamaat al-Fuqra. But Bailey?s is still a singular case. Much more common has been the practice of trying to intimidate critics into silence through legal threats.
The Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) has had great success with this over the years, although lately the tactic appears to be faltering. CAIR was unsuccessful in bullying the Young America?s Foundation into canceling a talk by me last week: the address went on as scheduled on Thursday. In 2006, CAIR dropped a lawsuit against Andrew Whitehead of Anti-CAIR after Mr. Whitehead?s attorney asked a series of probing questions during the discovery process. But before that, CAIR successfully cowed National Review magazine, Fox?s 24, and others into muting in various ways their criticism of Islamic violence and extremism.
Nor is CAIR alone among Muslims in its efforts at legal intimidation. Billionaire Saudi financier Khalid bin Mahfouz has sued journalist Rachel Ehrenfeld and others for libel in the U.K., where the libel laws favor plaintiffs. Ehrenfeld?s offense? In her book Funding Evil, she wrote that bin Mahfouz was involved in funding Hamas and al Qaeda. Bin Mahfouz denied that he had knowingly given any money to either. And Cambridge University Press has, in response to another libel suit filed by bin Mahfouz, just removed from circulation and destroyed all unsold copies of Alms for Jihad by Robert Collins and J. Millard Burr, because the book made essentially the same allegations. But France?s foreign intelligence agency has recently revealed that as long ago as 1996 Mr. bin Mahfouz was known as one of the architects of a banking scheme constructed for the benefit of Osama bin Laden ? and that both U.S. and British intelligence services knew this.
The most notorious attempt at legal intimidation of all may be the Flying Imams case, in which six imams are suing US Airways because they were removed from a flight for suspicious behavior. They are also ? although some reports now dispute this ? suing the passengers who reported them. If this suit succeeds, imagine the effect: no one will dare report suspicious behavior in an airport or airplane, for fear of being sued. And jihad terrorists will have a free hand.
The lawyer for the Flying Imams is Omar T. Mohammedi, who as of 2006 was president of CAIR?s New York chapter.
The murder of Chauncey Bailey should provide renewed impetus to call upon the American Muslim community to take genuine action against the deeply ingrained culture of violence that provides the context in which such things happen. And the pattern of legal intimidation has been followed so many times now that Americans are becoming increasingly aware of how it works and how it can and must be resisted. For if this intimidation ? both violent and nonviolent ? is not resisted, those who are doing the intimidating will eventually succeed in establishing a protected class in America, an ideology that cannot be questioned or rejected. And that, more than anything else, will be the end of any semblance of Constitutional government.

Does anyone want to address Islam in America, a thriving, pulsing, contributing, peaceful religion at home in its surroundings? Anyone who would in contradistinction gainsay that potential (and actuality) while cognizant of Christianity's own poison flowerings should check his "fair and balanced credentials" at the door. To be concise: this is a complicated matter, affected by many factors, that a blowtorch approach will not cure, if that indeed is what it needs.

It's exactly the same as headlining lunatic-fringe fundamentalist bombings of abortion clinics "Christians Bomb Clinics."

The radical excresences of Islam, today on "fine" display, are clearly surpassed by the "fruits" of Western, Christian civilization, within our lifetimes or close to it, represented by Moloch himself on earth, Nazism and its cognates, born, like radical Islam, of the mutations from a cultural theme, which, in the case of Europe, was an authoritarian structure, a proclivity to bow to authority's ideology, a long history of "xeno"-phobia, a notion of selectness and superhumanity, and a cold-blooded pursuit of ideology's goals while submerging everything moral to the will of the dictator. Professor, Tee hasn't even come close to addressing Rich's thought out reference to the bashing of Christianity, even going so far as to try and connect it to naziism, while the actions of Muslims who actually perform the acts Christians get erroneously tarred with, apparently gets a pass. I think there is a misprint, and I wanted to correct the first line in the bubble: it says "hate religion?", wherein, of course, it should be the noninterrogative, "hate religion." making it a simple declarative statement, and which more precisely addresses the theme of the cartoon itself, since the ACLU would be the first to defend the existence of any religion, as long as it were a real religion, and not a spawn of twisted, rightwing politics.
And I would applaude the ACLU, were this a serious statement, since America's new, politically designed hate religion is more pernicious that any of those so-called satanic religions that, come to think of it, hate religions often refer to, when not talking about that other spawn of Lucifer's hosts--the dreaded Liberals.
From the body politic of America, these so-called 'religions' which foment hate and division should be cauterized. Easy enough to smell them out. Just sniff for political content mixed in with religious cliches.

Good question. I never heard that quote before but it seems to be all over the net. Not with any really authoritative source so far, but I'll admit it's something he COULD have said. Because the ideas of Christianity (love your enemies, turn the other cheek, the meek shall inherit the earth) are kind of sick. If you ever get a chance to read Nietzsche's "The Genealogy of Morals," he claims that Christianity is the invention of the Jews who were physically inferior to the Aryans and so could defeat them only by scheming to sell them on a "transvaluation of all values."
What Nietzsche meant was that each "race" became subject to a leader or leaders and the leaders imposed their particular values on the race that they led. For example, a tribe might fall under the leadership of a warrior. His values would become their values. The tribe would come to value strength, brutality, good looks (because the leader and his lieutenants would simply grab the best-looking women of the tribe for themselves, so successive generations of warrior leaders would become better and better looking.) They don't have very highly developed legal systems because if they want something they take it and it's theirs as of right. (Of course if they misjudge the strength of the warrior who already has what they want to take, this could easily have fatal consequences.) The warrior tribes par excellence happened to be the Germans. Women like Heidi Klum. Men like Ahnold.
Other tribes fell under the leadership of priests. Priests are weaklings who aren't going to distinguish themselves in battle, so they are smart enough to hone their other skills - - "cleverness" as Nietzsche puts it. They aren't any good at war or hunting, but they're smart enough to figure out how things work, like calendars and crop planting and eclipses and stuff, and too smart to explain their knowledge to others except as mysterious communications from gods which only they can talk to. They manage to convince the dumb schmucks in the rest of the tribe that they are all at the mercy of some very angry gods and that only they, the priests know how to cool them out before any serious damage is done. They aren't as virile as the warrior class, so they don't get the real babes in the tribe, so over time the successive generations of priests become smarter and ever more devious but also weaker and uglier. They do however have highly developed legal systems because they'll spend hours and days arguing about who has the "right" to a property or a crop or a woman or a child because nobody has the balls to actually just get up and kill the owner and take what he wants by force. The priestly tribe par excellence just happened to be the Jews.
According to Nietzsche, the warriors are capable of feeling anger while the priests are capable only of resentment. That is to say, you fuck with an Aryan and he explodes and smites thee and then feels bad about it for the rest of his dumb fucking life, whereas you fuck with the Jew, who of course lacks the physical power to stand up and smite anyone, but he will nurse his "resentment" for a long time, brooding about it and scheming till his "cleverness" shows him some diabolical way to really fuck up his enemy without having to actually do battle with him. Well the Jews being full of resentment about the Germans couldn't physically do anything about it till one day some genius figured out the transvaluation of all values.
What do the warrior tribes value? Strength, pride, good looks, power, sex, fun. What do the priestly tribes value? Homeliness, modesty, "cleverness," meekness, studying books of religious gibberish. This is why good-looking babes in the Bible are usually evil sluts who cause the downfall of good men, like Delilah or Jezebel or Potiphar's wife. WHAT IF . . . what if those dumb fucking Aryans could be TRICKED into accepting all the values of their exact opposites, the Jews? They'd lose their racial pride and start fucking untermenschen - - sub-humans like Polacks, Slavs, blacks, Jews, etc. The Aryan race in one or two generations would lose all its fighting spirit, physical strength and blonde good looks, which of course would delight the "priestly" races, none more so than the Jews.
That was where Christianity came in. A made-to-order religion, not for the Jews who created it, but for their arch-enemies, the Aryans. Hey, here's a religion that tells ya to turn the other cheek, love your enemies, accept everyone as a member of your own family, quit looking at beautiful women (better to rip out your own eye . . . ) etc. But there was only one problem - - what Aryan in his right mind couldn't see that all this bullshit was coming from a bunch of sick, demented, wretched untermenschen, the Jews? Who would buy into anything they were selling? So of course, Jesus had to be crucified and the Jews had to be the ones who made it happen. Now NOBODY could claim this "new" religion was just more Jewish BS. They crucified him for Christ sake. How could this be their religion?
According to Nietzsche, the Aryans fell for it hook, line and sinker, bought the religion, abandoned their old Norse gods of thunder and sex and magic and lost all their racial pride. Soon they were having sex with all kinds of inferior races and polluting their own bloodstream for the next thousand years. In Germany, the blond Aryan uebermensch (superman) was already a thing of the past. The guiding philosophy of the Nazis certainly owed a lot more to Darwin and Nietzsche than it did to Jesus. Hitler's comment on "sick minds" might just have been some Nietzschean fragment surfacing in his consciousness at one particular moment in time.
Now I don't know how much of a Nietzschean Hitler really was, but the ideas of Nietzsche certainly infused some of the philosophers who influenced or even contributed to the development of the Nazi ideology. He obviously wouldn't have been too thrilled that Christianity had Jewish origins, whether or not he actually saw it as the Jewish plot that Nietzsche believed it to be.
But the photos are very interesting. Obviously whatever Hitler really felt about Christianity (and I believe he must have despised it for its "weakness" and its Jewish origins) he had no problem making friends with them and they had no problem making friends with him. For the most part. And to be completely fair about this, while most of the Christian churches and their leaders supported Hitler and his campaigns (the Pope held a special Mass to pray for the success of Hitler's armies at the beginning of the Russian campaign) there were plenty of priests and ministers at the lower levels who risked their lives to save Jews from the Holocaust. So I'd certainly never say that Christianity was ALL bad. But a lot of it was. And that's just a fact.

The most evangelical people I ever met were freindly drunks, who were very eager for me to learn their ways.
Science has adherants who are insistant on haveing its recepts taught to the young of nonbeleivers , some even, who want science to be the controlling principal of government and everyday life.

They destroyed 1.4 million chickens and ducks, all from areas where infections had been demonstrated. That's not "every single chicken and duck" in the country, it's not even close - it's estimated that China has a chicken population of 12 billion and a duck population of 3 billion. They killed approximately 1/100 of one percent of the fowl population. And it's not really news. We destroy feed animals all the time when an infection that can be transmitted to humans has been suspected.
What's news is that China waited so long to do it...
They've stepped up their inspections. China destroyed over 9 million poultry in the next 4 years, and they continue to search for and destroy infected populations.

I've read it. I've taken a university course on Islam. I have a pair of close Muslim friends, who I have witnessed acting more charitably than many Christians I know. So yes, let's discuss Muslim customs and Sharia law if you like, but be warned that if you are going to base it on literal translations, then you have to accept the same treatment of the Bible. If you want to look at Muslim historical tradition then you have to be prepared to look at Christian historical tradition as well. Can you do that?

The fact is, I'm more informed than the majority of the current population of the US. As are most of the people in this forum. These groups you've dug up don't represent Christian "terrorist" groups. They represent a political struggle, not a religious one. And if the best you can do is come up with Irish groups, you've proved my point once again! This is the old stand by for people making excuses for Islam. They bring up Ireland (which my wife and I visited last year by the way). The Irish "troubles" hardly meet the criteria here.

Professor, I don't HAVE a "hatred" for Christianity. I don't believe in it but they're people just like anyone else and as a religion it's no more dopey and wrong-headed than any other. What I quoted are actual facts, and if you knew the history of the Jews you'd probably have to agree that (a) they suffered more over the centuries from racist and religious violence than have any other people on earth and (b) every really huge massacre of the Jews, from the Crusades through the Ukrainian peasant revolt through the Spanish Inquisition through the pogroms of Eastern Europe through the Holocaust was caused by people who were either practicing, religious Christians or had been born and raised in that religion. I don't dwell on it in everyday life, but it has to come out when I see Christians laying claim to a moral superiority they have absolutely no right to, and accusing others of violence and killing when their own record on that is worse than any other religion on this planet.
And BTW the Christians who "support" Israel happen to be supporting the worst elements in the country - - the right-wing, "no land for peace" zealots and fanatics who mean to hang on to every square inch of what they consider the Promised Land regardless of how much pain and injustice they cause to their Arab neighbours. Well, what are they, about 1400 years old as a religion? When the Christian religion was about that age, it was in the throes of the Spanish Inquisition. Indeed, if some people would read Mein Kampf as opposed to simply believing the modern myth that Hitler, the Nazis, and Germans were all a part of some Neo-pagan cult, they might be stunned at what they find. We ask Mary to pray for us. Though there were (and probably are) people guilty of idolatry towards Our Lady, that has never been the position of the Church. Statues, icons, and art (including the cross) have been part of Christian heritage since the earliest of times. It does not make them objects of worship anymore than preachers who hold up their Bibles and pray are worshipping their Bibles.

Though you're right about much of what you say. And only the most ultra-conservative traditionalist Catholic is going to hide in the sand and claim that we historically treated the Jewish people with anything but horrible contempt (with a few exceptions) in the Middle Ages. It was after all Italian cities who invented the idea of marking Jews with yellow clothing or badges in Venice and Rome in the Jewish slums. Even after the Reformation it was Martin Luther who wrote about the solution to the "Jewish problem."
So let me ask, is it people like Irving Layton from whom a lot of this viewpoint stems? (By the way I think Layton is amongst Canada's greatest poets, so I'm not chastising Canadian authors here).

You should re-read the post. I wasn't "mauling" the Catholics, only pointing out that that as strict monotheists and non-idolators the Muslims were closer to the Jewish religion than the Catholics were. I'm also well aware of the RCC tradition regarding icons and statues (I believe the Eastern Orthodox Christians have a different take on certain icons) but, as d'Annunzio's "Gl'Idolatri" makes clear in a rather horrifying way, it is easy enough for the uneducated to slip into idolatry through the most innocent of Church statues and symbols. Similarly with the veneration of Mary, it's easy to cross over into divine stature and of course the Church's doctrine is that Jesus was of divine origin. As someone who doesn't even know if there is a God, let alone two or three or sixty-two of them, I'm not being negative towards either polytheism or idolatry, but facts are facts and the Muslims are doctrinally closer to the Jews than to Christianity in both of those key areas.

Well it's nothing I like to dwell on, but I feel compelled to point it out only when there is this hateful diatribe against Islam as a "cult of violence" or "cult of death," in supposed contrast to the wonderful and beneficent Christianity. Apropos Italy, Jewish survival rates in Italy were one of the highest in all Axis or Axis-occupied countries during WWII, which is directly attributable to the courageous attitude of millions of Italians in hiding and rescuing Jews, so whatever they did in the Middle Ages as far as I'm concerned is just water under the bridge. They're a great people and unlike all the other fascist or former fascist countries, they took care of their own fascist dictator in their own way on their own initiative.

Sorry to have to admit this, JS, but I never read anything of Layton's. Maybe I should. "This viewpoint" is probably the viewpoint of every single Jew of European origin on the face of the earth. It was my dad's, my uncles', my friends', my friends' parents' - - I don't actually know a single Jew who thinks that, historically, Christianity was anything but lethal for the Jews or that Jewish history under the Christians of Europe was anything other than a series of horrific massacres and persecutions culminating in the Holocaust. No doubt it was Layton's POV also. Mordechai Richler, another Canadian Jewish author whom I DID read (and wouldn't recommend) can speak of nothing else but. If you read enough Philip Roth, you'll find it there as well. I. B. Singer can't get away from it. It's only with Jewish people of Sephardic (North African) ancestry and tradition that you DON'T find this viewpoint - - they lived in Muslim lands and were not persecuted to anywhere near the extent that the Jews of Europe were persecuted. Persecution and massacre are just not a part of their history or tradition. Not that it never happened, just that nothing like European proportions were ever achieved.

Saint Francis of Assisi once wisely commented to: "preach the Gospel always, and if necessary, use words."
Despite its growth, Islam is not inherently an evangelical religion. In other words, they do not actively proselytize as a general rule (similar to Judaism in that regard). I don't understand why you expect Saudi Arabia to accept missionaries.

First, I don't believe in going into other countries and breaking their laws to preach Christianity. I guess that's beside the point.
Mainly, I don't get your beef with Islam on this count.
Proselytizing in some non-Muslim countries is illegal as well. Cambodia and Laos (Buddhist), Bulgaria (Orthodox Christian), off the top of my head. For that matter, your described brand of conversion tactics - preaching on the street corner - is illegal even in Israel (although there is no law against changing religion - just being a nuisance and making people listen to your preaching is illegal).

One of the very few positives of Jimmy Carter's Administration, for example, was his stance on human rights. I would go even further by stating that if nations do not adhere to basic human rights, perhaps the world community needs to cut them off or penalize them in some way. Or, as Plane might say "What impact would this have or not"?

As for Jimmy Carter, certainly the statement that he was "a great man, but a terrible president" has been repeated often enough. But even in Carter's term with his focus on human rights, he still put that aside to make decisions and alliances that flew in the face of what he stated publicly. I think all presidents have and although I'm the first one to complain about it and point out the double-talk, it's all part of the game of global politics.
