Title: NEW DebateGate coming
Post by: BT on February 05, 2011, 05:19:36 PM
What features would you like to see in the new DG?

I am thinking of a magazine style frontend with user contributed articles and a forum to discuss those and other topics.

A video and photo gallery is a possibility.

Is facebook and twitter compatibility important?

What else would you like.

How about a conference discussion group featuring live video,so we can see each other, and then have talks about certain hot topics. I would also like to see a DebateGate app for Droids & iphones.

Video conferencing is no problem. I'll look into the Droid apps, though RSS feeds should work.

love the "spell check" feature on the current forum

previews are nice

edit "without notice" for ten minutes would be nice

avatar is also nice on current forum
below avatar poster's optional location is nice I see on some forums

optional bio features that include as much or as little as member wants including pictures

the world has gone Facebook so a link to Facebook could drive more people here

the current forum is easy to read if there have been new posts to a particular thread

current forum allows for easy posting of YouTube videos

since I am color blind I like color charts that actually say
what the color options are instead of color with numbers

quote function is also good on current forum

thanks for trying to make forum better and taking suggestions

more ideas later..............

I miss some of the features of the original forum, like being able to post html (made posting pre-formated articles easy).

Discussion style forums like the original Yahoo! groups seem to have gone the way of the dinosaur. Most forums these days seem to be attached to blogs.

I'm not much into Facebook or Twitter, but I may be the last man on earth who isn't. Those might be worthwhile features.

BT....so far I am liking everything about the new format.
Looks clean, updated, new......
Thanks for the upgrade and all the behind the scenes work on this.
I notice some banner ads....will that help you cover the costs of all this? or do we need to donate?

Yes to Facebook and Twitter.

I'm also really enthusiastic about the idea of the ability to post HTML again! Will it be possible?

In the old yahoo club days you could copy and paste an article and the images and links would be pasted with it. Now that doesn't happen. And to be honest i don't think we will make that happen.

One very minor thing I dont like is some button blocks part of my posting name.....
I know I have a super long posting name....

there's no way you could make the font of just my
name smaller so it would not be obstructed is there?

could I take out the word "united" in my name?
can one edit their own name?
or do you have to start over?
i really dont want to start over

BT just curious.....is there any reason Font size 16 was deleted as a choice?
I often use 12, 14, 16, and 18 sizes....is there a way to get size 16 back?

There is a rating system we could implement.

I hate the look of the rating system!
It is a major distraction at the top of so many posts that say "NOT YET RATED"
It makes it look like something is missing.
Major thumbs down to the look.

Yes, there are lots of stunning women of Arab descent. Most people don't realize how many of the stunning models and actresses actually are of Arabian descent. Eastern Europe and the Baltic states have lots of stunning women as well.

Actually, the northern Europe / Nordic "blond hair and blue eyes" look gets old after a while - they tend to look "washed out" without makeup.

Wow BT you are responding to suggestions and input in lightning speed.
Thanks for listening and all the work.

Is the new platform going to allow you the moderator to easily add/delete images on the frontpage?
I think that could help you drive some traffic.

As issues, campaigns, world events change you could plug in updated images so someone browsing thru
would see that this place is current with issues.....people love pictures.....

Another suggestion....and you may already do this
but somewhere on the front or intro page put
"FREE POLITICAL MESSAGE BOARD" or "FREE SIGNUP"
also if people need an e-mail to join put that their e-mail will be kept private and not shared
People love "FREE" and they love privacy from Spam e-mail

also you know I love the "no notice" of an edit for at least 10 minutes if not up to an hour or two
it allows a poster that was in a hurry and didnt proof read to correct something without notice of doing so
but yet protects the integrity of the post if it needs to be sourced a week, a month, a year later.

Great....one other tiny suggestion is slightly enlarging the function buttons.
Or at least enlarge the frequently used ones?
I can barely make out the "insert image" icon
I guess it really doesnt matter once you get used to where it is...but still.
To make room for larger buttons maybe some less used could be dropped altogether?
What is a "teletype" button function? or "insert underscored list"? Does anyone ever use them?

I really like the current software...or the old.
Be careful on major changes....

That's kind of where we are now isn't it. At one time we had close to 50 people posting on a daily basis. We are down to what, six now?

The goal is to have a new site that is completely integrated. The current forum software doesn't do that. So it will boil down to what features we might lose if we go with an integrated solution vs what we gain by integrating.

We are going to have a problem with facebook integration anyway. Because people are known by their real names on there and use handles in this forum. But facebook is the best way to recruit, aqnd if we need anything it is we need new people.

Content is key. I am looking for folks who want to contribute articles about life overseas, travel, tv, book and movie reviews, slice of life stuff like lileks, cooking, health, sports, parenting, business, hobbies you name it, so the front page is always fresh. And those articles will create topics in the forums for discussion. Think Slate or Huffington Post or a small scale Yahoo. I'm even thinking about a consignment store or mini mall. I know a guy who makes as much selling birdhouses as he does from his SS check.

We will have a video channel and a music channel. Heck i'd like to do a user submitted short film festival. In a day or two we will be showing Brass's Oz Lion Film he made a couple years ago.

That's a rough idea where we are going.

The Lebanese are considered the most beautiful by everyone in the region. In addition, they simply have a level of class that is hard to describe - the way they carry themselves, the way they dress (always perfection).

Geeks in the Pre-Geek World (http://my-retrospace.blogspot.com/2011/01/fact-or-fiction-16-world-with-no-geeks.html)

Today geeks have practically become mainstream and nearly everyone is familiar with some of the different varieties - computer geeks, anime geeks, film geeks, video game geeks, etc.

But before the internet, before computers, before D&D and Star Trek did these types still exist? And what uncool things were they into back in the day?

Well Gilligan at Retrospace has a nice retrospective on the origins and early history of geeks and nerds here. (http://my-retrospace.blogspot.com/2011/01/fact-or-fiction-16-world-with-no-geeks.html)

First a bit of terminology:

Nerds are simply intelligent, industrious individuals who lack some social skills. Geeks, according to the modern definition, are those with a high level of interest and enthusiasm for a certain subject, whether it be baseball or horror movies. ?Nerd? has become much more pejorative than ?geek? because it carries a negative connotation on your place in society; whereas, there is now ?geek chic?.

A lot of what we refer to today as geekery would really fall under traditional nerdism. Classic geeks were a rarer, more elusive breed in the past before they were able to discover each other over long distances or evangelize. Neither were particularly athletic or familiar with the touch of a woman.

And what were the nerds into back then? Well I'm going to guess that it was mostly ham radio, rockets, and science fiction.

And lest you snicker - just remember that it's thanks to them and their nerdly efforts that kids today can finally watch pr0n from around the world at home on their computing machines x-boxes. The dream - achieved at last!

Europe's Gun Culture
 (http://www.brusselsjournal.com/node/4692)

Here George Handlery talks about how the Swiss view firearms and gun ownership in general. And points out that it's not all that far from the American view.

Universal military service in a small standing army backed up by reserves relying on all males is a national tradition here. Serving, being armed and citizenship are, to many, related concepts. By tradition, reservists, obliged to serve periodically to maintain their skills, take their weapons home. That made me the delighted guardian of my son?s assault rifle ?an excellent product. After the service, at around 45, the weapon can be kept if one participates in the ?obligatory? yearly shooting practice. A combination of these factors means that every village has a gun and pistol club and a shooting range. Target shooting is a national past time.

Plus his descriptions of a new in the wrapping K-31 makes me wish I had sprung for one a few years ago. But then I would have had just one more oddball caliber to deal with.

How Come The Kids Don't Talk So Good?

So why do kids these days always use vague terms and stuff and like, put in so many you know filler words and like uptalk too? Well Clark Whelton says he knows exactly when this happened:

Quote
Everything went so well that I hired interns at every opportunity.

Then came 1985.

The first applicant was a young man from NYU. During the interview, he spiked his replies so heavily with ?like? that I mentioned his frequent use of the word. He seemed confused by my comment and replied, ?Well . . . like . . . yeah.? Now, nobody likes a grammar prig. All?s fair in love and language, and the American lingo is in constant motion. ?You should,? for example, has been replaced by ?you need to.? ?No? has faded into ?not really.? ?I said? is now ?I went.? As for ?you?re welcome,? that?s long since become ?no problem.? Even nasal passages are affected by fashion. Quack-talking, the rasping tones preferred by many young women today, used to be considered a misfortune.

Well language does like change and stuff. I notice this kind of talking mostly among the teenaged members of my extended family. Part of it is just a teen language style but there's also an element of being deliberately vague and non-declarative so that you can never really be called on anything. Towards adults this style becomes a form of verbal passive-aggressiveness. So everything is kinda like tentative. And stuff.

I bought one of those a few years ago for $100  it turned out to be a lot of fun to shoot with a few odd features. The trigger pull is very long , the bolt pulls straight back like a Karg, and putting a scope on it is difficult. Also the bullets are Bredan primed so relaoding is very very difficult.

Not as hard to find bullets as you would think.

I sold it again and made money but I would buy another one if at a low price.
