But I hardly think that Reagan himself was nitpicking to the point of saying, "give them ketchup as a vegetable." I would assume that some idiot trying to create a budget came up with that "brilliant" idea.

Quote
The USDA convened a panel of nutritionists and food service directors to ponder what to do. One option on the table--no one later would admit to putting it there--was to "accept catsup as a fruit/vegetable when used as an ingredient." Some panel members seized on this as an opportunity to discuss whether to count ketchup even if used as a condiment. From what I can tell, the motive wasn't so much penuriousness as trying to face facts about what kids would actually eat. USDA standards at the time required that a reimbursable lunch consist of five items: meat, milk, bread, and two servings of fruit or vegetables. Many kids refused to eat the veggies and the stuff wound up as "plate waste." Would-be realists on the panel reasoned that if they could count ketchup as a vegetable they could meet federal standards without having to throw away so many lima beans, thereby saving money while having no impact on the kids. Looked at in a certain light, it made sense. Ketchup wasn't the only newly permissible substitute: pickle relish and conceivably other condiments could also count as vegetables (precise interpretation was left to state officials); protein sources like tofu or cottage cheese could replace meat; and corn chips, pretzels, and other snacks could replace bread. Minimum portion sizes were also reduced, purportedly another effort to reduce waste.

Reagan himself did not have a hand in most of what happened under his presidency: he was a figurehead who went along with whatever the script they gave him told him to say.

As for eliminating the entire school lunch program, that is inane. For many kids this is the only decent meal they are served all day.

Originally, school lunches had the goal of getting rid of tons of surplus commodities that would otherwise have spoiled or have been eaten by vermin. When I was in elementary school, they were always trying to figure out how to get us to eat bulgar wheat. Normally, this was not too successful, and generally was some sort of 'stuffing'. At the end of lunch, you could present your empty plate and if you managed to clean your plate every week, you were proclaimed a member of the "Clean Plate Club" and were rewarded with a Snickers bar on Friday. As I recall, not many kids threw away food because of this.

Sorry, by including the word necessary you've proven yourself, once again, to be a lying piece of shit.

It's always entertaining to watch how the foam-at-the-mouth left, will proclaim how Republican leaders are always "figureheads", just doing what they're told to do, but otherwise they're simply dunces, but Democrat leaders are always surrounding themselves with experienced people because it's the wise thing to do.

If it wasn't so transparent, it'd be laughable

So, if it wasn't Reagan who wanted to starve the Children, who was it, Xo?

It's funny isn't it? I was driving back from a meeting this morning listening to the news on the radio. Once again I was treated to a democrat politician telling how one of Barry's appointments was just the smartest, best person on the planet for the job his Oneness the Selected had chosen them for. You can see it in the NYObamaTImes also. Everything and everyone he's surrounding himself with is just so wonderful and just the best person for the job. The people Bush had were just such poopie heads. I really got a kick out of this guy when (can't recall which liberal he was) he said that no one, and I mean no one was a better selection that Mrs. Clinton.

I'm sure everyone else at the stop light was wondering what was so funny.
