Commute Saddam's Death Sentence?
« on: December 09, 2006, 09:21:18 PM »
Without close knowledge, my impressions of the Iraqi political situation allow me to speculate that maybe, just maybe, commuting Saddam's death sentence could play a role in starting a reconciliation process in Iraq. The Baathists are enamored of the guy, it seems, theone who personified their aspirations for some 25 years. Would they be moved -- placated -- by sparing his life. Certainly, as this terrible mess spirals out of control, it's worth a look.

Don't know about that. Do know they fail the gut check. Ask Mikey.

Commuting Saddam's sentence, first off, is not up to the US, but to the Iraqis. If the US badgered the Iraqis to do it, it would make them look even more indecisive and incompetent than they already do.

There are probably more that want him dead than want him alive. I don't think that he was a major Sunni hero, then, and he sure isn't now.

Americans don't have the stomach for war. Especially those that last longer than a sitcom episode.

<<Americans don't have the stomach for war.>>

That's bullshit.  What they can't stomach is pointless, unnecessary war for no good reason.  Once they finally catch on that the original reasons given to them for the war were a pack of lies.

In that regard, I don't think Americans are all that different from anyone else.

Nonsense. They wouldn't have the stomach if it meant an endless supply of oil at a buck a gallon.

Then why do you keep starting them if you know we are not worthy?

Huh?  Isn't that what I originally said?
