Herman Cain is really good at hollering silly one-liners. His degree of political sophistication resembles the moronic 'bagger signs at their rallies. To support him you would have to believe that Congress would give total support to a guy who wants to impose the "Fair" Tax and to improve education by eliminating the Department of Education.

What exactly does the federal Dept of Education do that the various states couldn't do themselves?

How do you have national standards without a national bureau of education?

How do you have any sort of agreement on a national curriculum or national evaluation system for faculty and students with no cabinet-level department?

The states might be ABLE to do some of these things, but they wouldn't.

Why would we need national standards decreed by a cabinet level bureaucracy? We didn't need a cabinet level bureaucracy for the hundreds of years prior to Jimmy Carter.

Test scores have gone down since the Department of Education began operating in 1980.

Hey Kramer....where in Cali are you?
I am coming out to Hermosa Beach for 4 days on June 19th.
Not sure I'll have time, but one of these trips I'd like to buy you a beer.
Is SIRS in Cali too?

-=============================================
Again, if we are to have national educational standards, like every other advanced country on the planet, we will need a national Dept. of Education.

Standards may have dropped since 1980 because of the relative percentage of poor and non-English-speaking students attending public schools. It is certainly NOT because of the Dept. of Education.

I'm not sure that setting national standards requires a cabinet level dept. Perhaps and Office of National Education Standards or some other wonkish title.

Think about it. The FDA is not a cabinet level department and they certainly set standards and have a day to day effect on our quality of life.

Yeah, they MIGHT be able to have something other than a cabinet level agency that could menage national educational standards. But I think that if Reagan could not abolish the DoE, no future reactionary has a chance of doing this.

Certainly not Herman Cain. Cain wants bills in Congress to be no more than three pages long. He is a simpleton and a jerk, and he will never get the nomination. He is not even up to the goofy jabbering standards of Ross Perot.

Really!

I didn't know that one, I LOVE it!

This would solve so many problems and it would cause no problems to anyone who didn't need to hide his real intent.
