SLV is doing better than GLD.

If you want to short a stock, just call Scottrade or Schwab, they will be happy to help you.

If you are unfamiliar with this, it probably isn't a good idea to try.

The market will recoup all its losses, as it always does. The only question is when.

I could easily have tanked. SLV has tanked before, when the Hunt brothers tried to corner the market.

SLV is doing better than GLD.
personally i think short term GLD is the better investment
silver may be better long term
but part of silver's value is related to the large industrial/manufactoring needs for silver
in my opinion the world's economy is heading south...so industries using silver may decline short term
a significant part of silver's inherent value will be tarnished (no pun intended)
where as gold is much more so a hedge against inflation and bad economic times
which i believe we are headed into

with that said I am a big fan of and own both.....SLV and GLD
in 2006 GLD was priced at $56.07 a share
today it closed at $167.12
not bad during a near depression.

agreed XO...
i have never shorted a stock and doubt I ever will
but i would think people that know how....are making a killing right now

well i really mean a lot more shares....not literally 100% of my portfolio
but in hindsite....it would have been very nice to have lots more
and it cant "easily" tank.....yes it could tank....like anything can tank....
including the US dollar....if the dollar is replaced as the world's reserve currency
you will see a tanking like no other tanking....it will be a disaster...and it could happen
BTW.....SLV did not exist when the Hunt silver situation arose
in fact i don't think ETF's were even in existence then

Pardon me whshing you have no further luck.

I hear ya Plane....i wish it was practical to be investing in a growing vibrant US economy
But I still think they're going to find a way to get some "additional herion for the addict"....lol
My brother thinks we are in for a disaster crash....
I think we are in for a very rough ride...but not doomsday...at least yet
they will find a way to get some more "feel good"
the addict does not like withdrawl pains
and will go to great lengths to avoid the pain of withdrawl and face reality
be it a war...or some other trickery....they'll find a way to continue the fraud

what a fraud it is...
today i hear Biden promised Somalia 100 million
so i guess we borrow 40 million of the 100 million we give "Black Hawk Down Somalia"?

Who "made $10bn on 10/1 bet that U.S. credit rating would be downgraded"?

Unknown investor or hedge fund 'made $850million bet'

Bet in futures market reportedly done at odds of 10/1
George Soros made similar bet on currency in 1992
But source says he wasn't involved in rumoured trade

By Mark Duell

9th August 2011

A mystery investor or hedge fund reportedly made a bet of almost $1billion at odds of 10/1 last month that the U.S. would lose its AAA credit rating.

Now questions are being asked of whether the trader had inside information before placing the $850million bet in the futures market, or if the bet happened at all.

There were mounting rumours that investor George Soros, 80, famously known as "the man who broke the Bank of England", could be involved.

Was it him? George Soros, 80, has been mentioned as potentially being the mystery investor who won a $1billion bet that the credit rating would fall

He made more than $1billion on currency speculation when the British pound left the Exchange Rate Mechanism on Black Wednesday in 1992.

But a source with knowledge of the firm said Soros was not involved in the rumoured trade and questioned whether in fact there had been such a trade at all.

The latest bet was made on July 21 on trades of 5,370 ten-year Treasury futures and 3,100 Treasury bond futures, reported ETF Daily News.

Now the investor's gamble seems to have paid off after Standard and Poor?s issued a credit rating downgrade from AAA to AA+ last Friday.

Whoever it is stands to earn a 1,000 per cent return on their money, with the expectation that interest rates will be going up after the downgrade.

Concerned traders: Wall Street opened down on Monday after Standard and Poor's issued a credit rating downgrade from AAA to AA+ last Friday.

The link has been made to Mr Soros in part because he has been tied to President Obama's administration since 2008, reported The Examiner.

He also recently stopped managing money for outside investors, meaning he is under less scrutiny from the Securities and Exchange Commision

But the mystery bet could easily have been made by another trader with similar resources, despite Mr Soros?s links with the Obama administration.

The bet also raises questions of whether President Obama and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner knew that a downgrade was on the cards.

<a href="http://Mr Geithner said in April there was &quot;no risk&quot; of a downgrade - but the government now appears annoyed, not surprised, by last week&#039;s decision." target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">http://Mr Geithner said in April there was &quot;no risk&quot; of a downgrade - but the government now appears annoyed, not surprised, by last week&#039;s decision.</a>

He has since slammed S&P for showing 'terrible judgment' in their decision and a 'stunning lack of knowledge' of U.S. fiscal budget maths.

SLV may not have been in existence when the Hunts tried and failed to corner silver, but the fact is that there were similar ways to invest in silver, and many got reamed when it plummeted.

Silver and gold have always been far more volatile than dollars.

XO most investments have had disaster days.
Silver collapsed once in the last 30 years....
Many publically traded companies have gone bankrupt in the last 30 years.
Many people holding stock in those companies got reamed or came away with nearly nothing.

Silver and gold have always been far more volatile than dollars.

The dollar was backed by gold until the 1970's

But then Nixon had to figure out a way to pay for all the socialist non-sense
Democrat LBJ put in place....so bingo.. he halted our money being back by gold
and he started just printing fiat money....

No printing press has been invented to print silver or gold....just fiat money.

Always is a long time....gold and silver have been around much longer than the dollar.

I just wiki short selling
It just occurred to me,wouldn't the very act of it artificially lower the price of the stock by cutting the confidence in the company?

Ex. By publicly letting people know what stock your shorting your letting people know which  stock to cut their loses.

US money was NOT backed by gold since 1933. This is a false statement.
It was backed by silver.
Now it isn't.

Nixon could have ended the Vietnam War in a couple of years. He claimed he had a plan.He didn't, and we paid the price for that.
