African-American Church Leaders
Condemn Obama For Gay Marriage Support

May 13, 2012

BALTIMORE (WJZ) Just days after President Barack Obama announced his support for same-sex marriage, pastors and priests around Maryland took to their own pulpits with their reaction and in some cases' condemnation of the president.

Derek Valcourt explains the president's comments have folks on both sides of the issue fired up.

Both sides hope the president's position helps sway votes in their favor when the issue hits Maryland's ballot this November.

"I think same-sex couples should be able to get married," Obama said.

When Obama announced that his position on same-sex marriage had evolved, it outraged some African-American pastors like Pastor and Del. Emmett Burns.

"He has said to his base, African-Americans, "I am going against your beliefs and your thoughts"' Burns said.

He's so opposed to same-sex marriage, he told church members he will no longer support the president and now predicts Obama will lose the election because of it.

He and many other leaders are pouring their energies into gathering the signatures needed to put Maryland?s same-sex marriage law on the November ballot.

"I think it might be a call to action for people to really express what they believe," Father Erik Arnold of Our Lady of Perpetual Help said.

In Maryland, some of the strongest opposition to the law has come from the black community, about 30 percent of the population. Some African-American religious leaders are preaching about it

"God said in every home, there needs to be a representation of his glory through manhood and femininity," Pastor Harry Jackson, Hope Christian Church in Beltsville, said.

"To me, this is an issue of the separation of church and state," Pastor Delman Coates, Enon Baptist Church in Clinton, said.

Coates is one of the few black pastors who supports the current law.

"We should not allow our subjective theological understandings prevent other citizens of this country from having equal rights," he said.

So far, voters in 30 states have rejected same-sex marriage

But equality advocates in Maryland believe the president?s comments are a sign of the changing tide.

"The momentum is shifting. I think things are definitely shifting in our direction here," Ezekiel Jackson of Marylanders for Marriage Equality said.

Many African-American pastors say they will still support the president in November even though they may not agree with him on this particular issue.

The president's announcement that he supports same-sex marriage came just one day after voters in North Carolina banned same-sex unions.

I think that Obama was a one term president already.

Does he want a "Profile in Courage" award as a consolation prize?

Barney Frank thinks this will change few votes, I think he is right, President Obama was not fooling manywith his "evolving" stance.
Now that the fig leaf is gone I expect he looses some of his base , but he was already loosing on the cost of his nonsensical health care plan.

Now when he looses will he say that the US was not evolved enough?

Laughable that he is planning his loss mitigation.

Gay marriage is the future of this country. It is unstoppable, just as civil rights was unstoppable, just as the end of prohibition was unstoppable.

Fifty years from now the dipsticks who oppose gay marriage will be equated with kluxers, kleagles and grand dragons.

Fiscal responsibility coupled with small government, school choice, and an end to abortion are the future of this country. It is unstoppable, just as civil rights was unstoppable. Fifty years from now the dipshits that caused the intrusive reckless spending of gvt, opposed school choice, and supported the murder of unborn children will be equated to other shameful failures in the ash heap of history.

To both of you.

Small government is not now a trend, nor has it ever been a trend, nor will it be a trend.

Big business makes big government inevitable.

If you want small government, I suggest Bhutan, Mongolia, perhaps Pitcairn Island.

You can never and will never prevent abortion. All you can do is prevent it for the poor, who will outnumber and eventually overthrow you. You are the seeds of your own destruction and cannot see that you are blind.

There is no reason for government to adzorb 20% of all human effort, and we are worse than that now.

How much do we need to be governed?

I consider it quite possible that many or most of us can get along with very little governing, llet the government consentrate on the few that really needs to be told what to do all of the time and on the few times that most of us need.

We need a powerful government to prevent Big business and others from running off with all the cookies. The world is, now more than ever, in a constant state of change. To keep up with change, we need a government that can act quickly and intelligently as events change. The "small government" bunch wants to go back to the 1950's as it existed in Ronald Reagan's
head and really no place else.

I do not need to be governed. Cameras on every street corner to fine everyone is NOT my idea of good government at all. We need a powerful national government to prevent tor local yokels from doing crap like that, because local elections do not seem to be effective.

There is not now any trend to "small government". All we will get is repression and scams from all manner of private businesses.

Small government is not now a trend, nor has it ever been a trend, nor will it be a trend.

Freedom is a trend, freedom is the truth, and in the end the truth always will win.
Liberalism is based on a lie, on trying to alter reality, thus it will eventually lose.
Gvt that controls everything like North Korea are doomed for failure.
Places where gvt controls everything provide lower standards of living.
It's not an opinionn....it's undisputable fact.

If you want small government, I suggest Bhutan, Mongolia, perhaps Pitcairn Island.

I suggest there will be wonderful places in spots like Utah/Montana/Idaho/ect after the next
civil war or after freedom wins out and states start to break-away with or without a civil war.
I am now tending to think there will be no civil war when states break away because of
the internet and the great costs it would bring due to massive gun ownership by law
abiding citizens. Big controlling gvt will eventually cause people to seek truth/freedom.

You can never and will never prevent abortion. All you can do is prevent it for the poor, who will outnumber and eventually overthrow you. You are the seeds of your own destruction and cannot see that you are blind.

Nothing in life is 100%.....you also can't stop all robbery....but it can be made difficult.
Slavery was thought to be the norm, until the truth won out.
Abortions in the US peaked in 1990 and have and will continue to decrease.
Time is on the pro-life side of the argument.
Medical Science will make it harder & harder to cover the lie of what abortion really is.

I really do not care.

A woman has a right to decide to have a child or to have an abortion. You have no right to interfere. Get hosed.

`my question is do people think it surprising about african americans are againmst it? the very reason prop 8 got approved was total misunderstanding of the minority vote.

minorities has consistantly been conservative . it`s not thier fault conservative candidates rarely ask for thier votes. some are even insulting to minorities for voting to them.

Yep it's obvious you have no care for the baby.

1800: A slave owner has a right to decide to have a slave or not.
You have no right to interfere.
Get hosed!

Disgraces all come to an end eventually as will this one!

Fetuses are not persons.

They have no right to decide anything. All decisions belong to the mother.

You have no right to claim that you are their lawyer.

And as Cu cleverly referenced, could all have been said back in the days of Slavery.  Slaves were only partial persons, they had no rights, all decisions belonged to the slave owner.  yada, blah, etc.
