New Jersey town to Ala. volunteer utility crew: Don’t help with Sandy unless you’re unionized
The Daily Caller

Utility crews from several states East of the Mississippi River hit the road this week to volunteer their time and talents in Northeastern states hit hard by Hurricane Sandy. But crews from Alabama got the shock of their lives when other workers in a coastal New Jersey town told them they couldn’t lend a hand without a union card.

Derrick Moore, who works for Decatur Utilities in Decatur, Ala., told WAFF-TV in Huntsville that crews in Seaside Heights, N.J. turned him and his crewmates away, saying they couldn’t do any work there because they’re not union employees.

As a result, crews from Decatur and Huntsville left the Jersey shore and headed to Long Island to pitch in.

WAFF’s Mark Thornton reported that Moore and his coworkers “are frustrated being told, in essence, ‘thanks, but no thanks.’”

Another nonunion Decatur Utilities crew is idling in Roanoke, Va., waiting for instructions from Seaside Heights. The town asked them days ago for help, but later told the workers to stand down.

A rejected crew from the Joe Wheeler Electric Membership Co-op in Trinity, Ala. has already turned around and headed back to Dixie.

Electric repair work for public utilities in New Jersey is dominated by the International Brotherhood Of Electrical Workers, a unit of the politically powerful AFL-CIO.

Many parts of coastal New Jersey are projected to be without electric power for at least seven to 10 more days.

I've never had much use for unions. I had several-run ins with them over my working career, and none of them good. I've seen them walk off a job because a contractor came out of the main office trailer with a pocket screwdriver in his pocket - not that he intended to use it, he didn't even realize he had it, but their labor contract specified no non-union workers could bring tools onto the jobsite. A lot of their regulations are just plain ridiculous.

Perhaps the union bosses should consider the optics of such a move. I wonder if the story will affect red cross donations.

This will be very helpful for unions when contract renewals comes up. They will have to answer how are you useful in a disaster?

Volunteers are people who work for free. Most electrical line workers are not volunteers, they are simply on paid loan from their usual jobs elsewhere.

There were no non-union fire rescue workers in 9-11. This is just some stupid political antiunion garbage.

Actually the garbage is turning away ANYONE who can help, be it electrical, firefighting, or whatever, because they're non-union.  THAT's garbage

Really? I know several volunteer fire department members who went to help in the aftermath of 9-11. Being members of volunteer fire departments, they were also non union.

The electrical workers they turned away were from electrical cooperatives, which are common in the south. That IS their regular job, just that the workers in many electrical cooperatives are non-union workers. The object of the cooperatives is to provide inexpensive power to rural areas, not overpay some guy for doing the same job with a union card.

I saw Victoria's Secret had scheduled a fashion show, and hired several generators for their lights and equipment for the show. They turned those over to help with disaster aid. I wonder if anyone bitrched because they were non union?

And the marathon donated the use of their generators, food, water, etc that they were going to use to disaster relief. Did they bitch because of that?

No, the unions bitched because the co-op workers might be cutting into the lucratrive overtime their card carrying members might be getting. Screw the customers and whether the co-ops can do just as good a job and get power to Granny Jones down the street who needs power for her oxygen generator so she can breathe, we ain't having no one without a union card repairing power lines.

We don't want any redneck co-op workers up north here. They might try to infect our kids with Jesusism.
