Or do you actually believe that everyone could have an identical license plate? That would tend to diminish the entire purpose of a distinctive plate for everyone.

Your rights are not compromised in any way because DC won't let ONE SINGLE PERSON have a license plate that reads "FREEDOM".

Anyone can put FREEDOM on a bumpersticker. Why is putting it on a license plate some sort of restriction of rights?

There was a court case, believe it or not, over some guy that put black tape over the slogan "Live Free or Die"on a NH plate. He said he preferred live over all other alternatives, which is certainly his right. But some cop had other ideas, and gave him a ticket, which made it to the Supreme Court.

He won the case. Now only MOST NH people express this sentiment, most of them unaware that they are doing so, on their license plates.

License plates are not about freedom. A truly free person would refuse to even pay for one or put it on his car. This would be unwise.

I prefer "Wander Indiana" as a license plate slogan. Indianians, it seems, did not.

In Florida, we advertise oranges and sunshine on our plates, unless we pay extra.

Here are some banned FL plates, including I HVA GUN and BDAZ VET. You cannot hacve SHERIFF on your plate, even if you are a sheriff.

Do you always miss the point by going down some ridiculous tangent?

The point is that if citizens are allowed to choose words on their license plates
then why should "Freedom" not be a word that is allowed?

Unless character space is the issue, I can think of no
rational reason why "Freedom" should not be allowed.

I don't actually CARE. Perhaps in a highly political place like DC, someone thinks that there would be too much temptation to bribe someone in the DMV.

In any case, since only ONE person could have this word, it is not a public civil rights issue.

It sounds to me like it is likely not even true. This is the sort of crap 'baggers like to complain about: insignificant and meaningless affronts to their supposed rights, like the War on Christmas.

It could easily be that the word was already assigned.  I wonder if "LIBERTY" is also banned.

Again, my main point is that this is nothing for me or anyone to actually care about.

Anyone who wants to tell other motorists that he likes FREEDOM is certainly free to use a bumpersticker.

I am more of the mind that I would like to make my license plates invisible to thieving traffic light cameras, which means I would want the rear of my car to be as generic-looking as possible. Every time I see one of those damn things flash, It bothers me, and I do not run stoplights.

Because they ticket the DRIVER, and fine the OWNER. Because there are many situations where if you do not get out of the way of some idiot behind you, you can get rear-ended. 

You say you want FREEDOM, but now you are arguing that a machine has the right to fine you even when you are not driving the car or when you could be preventing being rear-ended.

I used to sometimes come to a 95% stop, look, and roll thru
now because I got a camera ticket I come to a 100% complete stop
not 95, not 97, not 99%....a 100% stop
it's obvious they are working...
i see people all the time stop because they see the camera
friends tell me the same story about themselves

Being ticketed for someone else driving your car through a red light is not justice.

As I said, everytime I see one of those cameras flash, it upsets me, because ypou never know if the damned thing is set correctly,and you do know that it is managed by some bloodsucking service you never voted for.
