Over the past 25 years, from 1989 to 2014, Koch Industries has donated $18,083,948 in political contributions to Republicans. While that seems like a large sum, it only ranks them as number 59 on the list of top all-time political donors....behind 18 different unions....of course we know who gets most of the Union money!

Here is the list of unions that top the Koch Brothers in political donations.

Via Open Secrets:

2.) American Fedn of State, County & Municipal Employees $60,667,379

Again, which not only completely undercuts the idea that the Koch brothers are some evil unamerican organization that gives only to Republican causes, but completely ignores the millions of $$$$$ that Dems get from their own uber rich PAC's and Donors.  How the hell is that any different than what the Koch Brothers do??    :o

I am not understanding something.

Why would someone give a lot of money to both sides?

Are they picking individuals rather than causes?

Are they trying to sponsor the public debate?

Are they buying ears in high places?

I don't know , this seems unexplained, I don't see how giving any amount to both sides is more effective than giving to one side.

Why would someone give a lot of money to both sides?

If you need or lobby gvt for any reason
to enact legislation or to prevent certain types of legislation
many hedge their bets
sure most prefer one side or the other wins
but some can't afford to "bet the ranch" all on one side
giving to both sides, especially on the corporate side is not uncommon

even myself as a conservative
i would primarily donate to conservatives
but there are certain democrats I might donate to
i am pro-flyers-rights and like some democrats views and actions
that will not allow passengers to be held hostage on airlines.

Airline Passengers' Rights Flying High with New Senate Bill

FlyersRights.org Applauds Senate Commerce Committee for Recognizing Airline Passengers' Rights

Napa, CA - 07/14/2009: Today, the Senate Commerce Committee unveiled its version of the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2009 which includes important Airline Passengers? Bill of Rights provisions.  Among those provisions;

Passengers will have the right to return to the terminal after three-hours on the tarmac if the pilot determines this can be done safely.

While on the tarmac, airlines will be required to provide food, potable water, working restrooms, and reasonable cabin temperature and ventilation.

"This is a major victory for airline passengers," said Kate Hanni, whose organization has been working for over two years for airline passengers' bill of rights with a three hour minimum.  "But the war isn't won yet."  Airline lobbyists are already on the Hill in force fighting against these provisions.  If and when these rights are eventually passed by the full Senate, House leaders will still have their say in conference.  Despite intense focus over the last two years to persuade key House leaders of the need to impose time limits, the House chose to leave that option to the airlines.  "This would have led to mass consumer confusion - one airline could have a limit of 5 hours, and another airline could have set a limit of 10 hours," says Ms. Hanni.

"Our coalition and airline passengers everywhere wish to thank the members and leadership of the Senate Commerce Committee for this important legislation," said Ms. Hanni.  Chief proponents of the three-hour limit were Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) and Senator Olympia Snowe (R-ME).   Chairman Rockefeller (D-WV) introduced the bill on behalf of Ranking Member Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX), and the leadership of the Aviation Operations, Safety and Security Subcommittee, Chairman Byron L. Dorgan (D-ND) and Ranking Member Jim DeMint (R-SC).

Other airline consumer-friendly provisions were championed by Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) and Senator John Thune (R-SD).  "It looks to our coalition as though this was a bipartisan, group effort.  We're so pleased that this committee is able to work together and focus on the interests of the flying public," said Ms. Hanni.

FlyersRights.org has over 25,000 members and is the largest non-profit airline passengers' rights coalition.  For more information, contact Kate Hanni directly at 707-337-0328 or Kate@flyersrights.com.

I just want to know why airlines think  it's safer to make passengers stay on the plane so long.but  not make much effort of comfort for the passengers

Kimba there are all kinds of excuses they use, in my opinion almost none are acceptable.

It usually boils down to money, inconvenience, hassle, scheduling nightmares for the airline,
terminals that are so called "full" and thus cant handle any more people, airport staff
have gone home for the night thus plane can not deplane passengers, blah blah blah,
and they see it as a very unusual event that should be endured by the unfortunate
passengers of that particular plane rather than upset the apple-cart.

I see three hours on a tarmac as a realistic logical limit.

These horror stories although rare are just unacceptable
where passengers are trapped in a plane on the tarmac for
8, 10, 12, 18 hours.

Passengers held hostage on a plane sitting on a tarmac
for over 5 hours should begin to take on the aspect
of it being an emergency where a "what-ever it takes"
mentality takes over and the passengers are at least
given the option of getting off.
