On the matter of illegal immigrants
« on: July 10, 2014, 12:15:07 PM »
I got a different response to this article

http://blog.al.com/wire/2013/06/black_leadership_group_protest.html

Meaning as a american born citizen who by all rights should be able to speak clearly in america. Why should these illegals be serious threat in matters of getting a job?? I'm from a english speaking country so I should be a much greater threat than those in question. It kind of raises doubt of how capable americans are in general

The ability to pick fruit rapidly in an orchard or stoop labor crops in a field is more important than the ability to speak English. When Alabama decided to get tough on presumed illegal aliens recently the Black unemployment rate did not go down. What happened was a lot of crops did not get harvested at all.  The assumed competition between American born workers and illegal aliens is more complicated than Sen. Sessions apparently believes.

A few months ago it dawned on me the buy america only notion is a terrible thing for this country. Because it'll undermine innovative growth by eliminating the competative element. Thiers a reason people prefered imported cars over locally made.

I agree Kimba.  Competition is what drives most people to do things better/faster/more efficient.  That's just human nature

The problem with this strategy is that it is not actually possible to buy only American made products. There are a lot of things that are not made here at all. American cotton is made into thread to sew  buttons on shirts made of Chinese cloth sewn in Bangladesh under an American brand name. with the label Paris-London-New York.

You can, of course buy American made clothes at low low prices, if you shop at the Goodwill and check out the labels. What could be more efficient that buying a dead guy's thirty years old pants fpor $3.50?

Yes Americans are incapable....that's why everyone wants to move here!  ::)

People come here because they need the money. Mexican peasants are far better at picking fruit than Americans, and it is the sort of cheapjack piecework sort of thing that they are used to back in Mexico.  People come here because it is accessible by land from Mexico and Central America. It is a lot more difficult to get to Belgium or Switzerland or Germany.

Americans are capable at many things, but if one did not grow up on a farm, farm labor is not likely to be one of them.

And no, not everyone wants to move here. Not even most of the world wants to move here. Most people would prefer to stay home than to come to a foreign land where they have to learn another language and take a job at the bottom.

my family didn`t want to come here(we went to Canada), most of my relatives and friends didn`t want to come here . it was simply  face prison or  go some place else and hope it works. remember thiers is no American advertising for people to come here so not really a lot of people are compelled to come here. it only looks that way because the world is large so it seems a very large amount of people come here.

this is a great country for people to have a clean slate though. I suspect I know people involved in genocide.

You are so full of shit.

More people immigrate to the United States that any other place in the world.

It's not even close Bozo.

And most of them are not coming here to pick fruit....so stop pushing that lie too.

To say "more people would prefer to migrate to the united states than to any other country" is hardly the same as saying "EVERYONE wants to migrate to the United States"

Most people in the world would prefer not to migrate at all.

I did not say that people come here with the intent of picking fruit. I said that people with experience at picking fruit in other countries are better at picking fruit than Americans who have little experience at picking fruit.

I am the best in the world at what I do.

Only a bit of the world really needs what I do.

I made myself fit my niche , now I am overspecialized .

Not on purpose , it just happened that way.

The people who feel threatened by non-English speakers are those Americans who speak no other languages. They probably took Spanish and French in HS and hated it, because learning a language involves a certain amount of drudgery when it comes to memorizing vocabulary, and of course, when one tries to speak a foreign language, it is embarrassing when people do not understand what they say or they do not understand simple questions such as the ones they are asked. Of course, Americans are really, really bad at teaching foreign languages. Language in general is a MAJOR trial for most Americans, since English is unphonetic in the extreme and hard to spell. Probably most Americans cannot write a coherent paragraph without making some sort of errors. Match is the other bugaboo. We know this because of all the complaints about how insufferably HARD it is to do the income tax. I admit I do not enjoy doing my taxes, but the hardest part is just getting the records together and remembering all the stuff I need to include. The math is a whiz, since I use an online program and actually do not have to do much math.

Most Americans have a sort of inferiority complex about all the stuff the do not know, such as language, history and geography, and they cover this up with a huge WE'RE NUMBA ONE giant rubber finger-waving superiority complex known as American Exceptionalism. Americans are certainly far from the bottom in our accomplishments, but we are NOT best at everything. We talk about how our system of government is "best in the world", when the reality is that is does not work much of the time, especially at the present moment, and there is not a single country that has adopted the more idiotic of our institutions, such as the Electoral College or the arrangement whereby different states compete with one another by luring businesses to themselves by spending taxpayer money to build roads, infrastructure and even buying land and building structures on it to give to the industries along with tax breaks for way longer than they should. Other countries NEVER adopt electoral colleges, and rarely have this "sovereign state" crap that beggars one state after another in a race to the bottom.

I think you have a good point to make there about the education of language and math needing improvement.

But it is not this that makes immigration seem like a threat.

At one time we were getting a flood of English speaking Irishmen and it took decades for acclimation and acceptance to become the norm rather than alienation and rejection. A lot of immigration law was made in those days.

Are the immigrants planning to become good citizens of the USA ? This could probably happen , but why is it a good idea that the immigration be chaotic?

Your statement that the poor Irish that came here to avoid starving in the potato famine mostly spoke English is incorrect. They had to learn English here because people did not speak Gaelic. Attempts were made by the "Know Nothing Party" to keep them out, but most were defeated, because cheap labor was needed in the north, since slavery had been abolished. The Civil War was the factor that drew the Irish into American society. A great great great grandfather of mine came to Georgia in 1832 before the famine and bought a plantation on land the Indians had been driven off of for $1.25 per acre. He did not want to be identified as an ignorant famine Irishman, so he returned to Dublin, became and Anglican, and attained the 33rd degree of the Scottish Rite Masonic Temple there before he returned.

I do not think that any immigrant plans to be a BAD citizen. It is difficult to attain prosperity without a decent education.
No one plans for anything to be chaotic. The chaos now is because the GOP demands that the president solve the problem without voting money to do so, which involves hiring judges, providing asylum attorneys and improving living facilities. The GOP simply wants the President to look bad.
They have done everything to that end since he was elected. The problem will not be resolved for free.
