In 1913, over half the country were poor, starving farmers. This was a racist country where lynchings occurred daily.

Won "eight wars"?   Is that counting Buchanan's Mormon War?

This is stupid historical cherrypicking and of no consequence whatever.

In 1913, over half the country were poor, starving farmers.

Exactly...even more the reason we do not need an IRS now.
And the IRS has zero to do with the poverty rate.
But once again nice "straw man" argument.

ps: please provide a source for your ridiculous claim that half of all Americans were "starving" in 1913.

This was a racist country where lynchings occurred daily.

LOL....if in doubt reply with the meaningless racism charge...even if it makes no sense.
The IRS had nothing to do with the lessening of racism.
Of course Republicans had to combat the racist Democrats to get legislation passed to stem racism.

Until 1913?
It is eight only if you do not count all the Indian Wars and smaller conflict wars.

If you counted everything , you might get past sixty.

Also they were all victories according to us, some opponents disagreed.

Would the government get by on less , or would the replacement for the IRS garner just as much as the IRS in some other way?

If our government got less money would it be forced to be more peaceful?

It is a waste of time to advocate flat taxes and national sales taxes.  Only the rich and the stupid want this. It is not going to happen: the income tax is here to stay.

No one loves any sort of taxes.  Everyone likes government programs that benefit themselves and dislikes those that do not benefit them.

The only advantage of some sort of sales tax is that can be made invisible, hidden in the prices of things we buy and use.

A government is an absolute necessity for any country, and a government will have to fund itself from taxes, natural resources (as is done in the UAE and Kuwait) or both.

Even necessary evils are evil , it is good to minimize the evil to the least possible , just the minimum that gets the necessary job done.

Saudi Arabia demonstrates the overlap that exists between government and business, there is a sort of family business that runs the nation and affiliated businesses that own everything else.

There isn't much difference between a business and a government in the money respect except for one thing, governments do not really have a profit motive. This is a sad lack on the government side , without a profit motive there is almost no limit on silliness and unsupportable waste, wasteful businesses loose customers to better run businesses, there is no equivalent check on government waste until war of conquest puts more effective government up.

Government regulation is needed , but ought to be pared back to the bare need , anti trust laws are the most beneficial of them all, but we are somehow allowing companies to get too large to (allow to)fail .

I think anytime the businesses are so large that having one of them fail becomes a national tragedy , there ought to be a process to measure and cut the thing in two. The opposite thing has happened too often , as when Boeing ate McDonald Douglas leaving us now with just about one manufacturer of large airframes.

Centralizing authority and power in government too much is a very similar problem.

The purpose of a government is not, and should never be,m to make a profit.
The purpose of any government is to serve the citizens.

Here in Florida, we have an asshole businessman who thinks that the state government is a business. He has continued Jebbiebush's stupid plan to privatize prisons, and prisons and child welfare are mired in unnecessary deaths, murders and corruption.

This is an old arguement and a failing one since after 1913 the government has gain more income from taxes than with the previous system so why give it up. Now the real question can the government get more money with lower taxes. Remember the IRS is a government agency and as such is extremely vulnerable to bureaucracy. So it's highly likely not operating at maximum level and from my experience anyone in control will likely have no idea how to run it effectively.

Ex. A common way to government to make money is cut staffing and increase collections and complain how come not enough money is collected

What generally happens when the Republicans are in charge is they cut way back on staff for the IRS, which of course, causes them to focus on fewer scofflaws.  It is not the IRS who should be blamed for this, it is Congress who has cut back on staff.

Not blaming IRS. I am blaming how it's run.

I have no real complaints. The only problem I have ever had doing my taxes was understanding how to calculate the depreciation bit on a Joint gas drilling partnership I bought on recommendation of a relative who was a broker. My investment was only about $3000, and the difference between claiming the deduction or not claiming it, so far as I could figure, was around $20. Kelley Oil told me that they could not help and to consult my accountant. I have no accountant, so I ignored that section and never had a problem. On one occasion I made a math error in my favor and they asked me for $300 more. On another I overpaid, and I got a check for $500. I always do my own taxes.

So far as I can tell, my profits from Kelley Oil (which was bought out by another company that went broke) were around 17% annually, less than a couple of mutual funds I bought and sold during the same years. The worst part was I got a lot of calls from salesmen trying to sell me more joint partnerships. A person would have to be a real fool to buy from those guys.

On a couple of occasions I have called the IRS for advice and they were helpful and friendly.
