Nearly half of students don't speak English at GA elementary school

August 3, 2015

By Victor Skinner

CANTON, Ga. - A Georgia elementary school launched a new program for upcoming school year that will rely on older students who just learned English to help teach younger students the language.

"Approximately 42 percent of our students are served in our program for English as a second language," Canton Elementary School Principal Beth Long told WSBTV.

That means about 336 of the school's 800 students must learn how to speak, write and read English fluently, a process school officials contend takes five to seven years.

To help speed the learning, school officials plan to use older students as translators for younger students to help teachers communicate lessons effectively, according to the news site.

"The new school year will be very interesting here at Canton Elementary," WSBTV reporter Darryn Moore said. "The student population is very diverse and English is not the first language for many kids."

The news story provided omitted all details on the school?s new program, including the cost. But Canton isn't the only elementary school relying on special programs to cope with an increase in ESL students.

At Warren Elementary in Bowling Green, Kentucky, students from numerous schools spent the summer working on their English for the 2015-16 school year, according to the Bowling Green Daily News.

The program was free for the roughly 70 fourth through seventh graders who participated in the daily lessons. Those kids received free breakfast and lunch throughout the summer. ("FREE FREE FREE FREE FREE"....LOL)

The students also participated in other summer programs, like the Junior Achievement entrepreneurship program, Kids on the Block obesity program and the local summer reading initiative. They were also escorted on field trips, including one this summer to Lost River Cave.

Janet Yeager, who has worked with the Bowling Green ESL summer program since it started 13 years ago, said the growth of ESL students locally has been "phenomenal."

"It grows every year," she said of the program, according to the news site.

These immigrant kids are the salvation of the older Americans, because if they were not here, then their taxes would not support our elderly when they retire.

So you ought to make sure they get a really good education.  Most of them are HERE TO STAY and we should be thankful for that.

You mean Americans are not having enough babies?

We used to do that.

Most of the ones that were aborted are poor and minority children. You donlt like them, either. And your statistics are way off. Teenage pregnancies have dropped by nearly half, abortions have dropped by a third.

yes "i don't like them" that's why I fight for them to survive and
several members of my immediate family have spent time in
jail after being arrested at Obortuary protests.

your statistics are way off. Teenage pregnancies have dropped by nearly half, abortions have dropped by a third.

My stats are not way off.....
because abortions have been reduced recently
does not erase the fact that we have aborted ten of millions
of babies in this country and those roughly 50 million people would be a in our society today
and thus no need to import tens of millions of uneducated poor non-english speaking illegal
immigrants.

illegal???

that article did not mention the citizen status of those kids

do not forget these kids are learning ESL meaning they have a higher potential than a american born to be more productive as long as they retain thier birth language.

remember that old texas saying "english only mean we got more school dropout for the fields"

If they were born here, they are citizens.

We did not bring immigrants into the US. Not most of them, they brought themselves. Most people stay put. They do not go to places where they muct learn a new language. Just like you staying in Texas your entire life, and speak only English. You are typical. Immigrants are not typical.
People who move, either within their own countries or across borders see that there are few opportunities at home, and move. They learn to adapt. To say that their children do not learn from this is erroneous.

You assume that unwanted children (which unaborted fetuses would be) are in some way superior to the children of Spanish-speaking parents who had rather a lot of ambition to come here. I don't think you can prove that.

Again, POOR women are prevented from having abortions. Rich women can get an abortion anytime they wish, even outside this country, and there is not one thing you can do to prevent it.

Asa group, children who grow up unwanted tend to be more likely to be homeless and criminals, though there are exceptions. Some are both successful and criminals, like Rick Scott, who stole millions and bought himself into the governor's chair.

We do not need such people.

Why do you say superior?

If these school age children speak no English , then it is unlikely that they were born here.

Since these kids are unwanted , wouldn't it be cheaper to kill them than to teach them English?

You seem to know less than diddly about immigrants in general and Hispanics in particular.
You have never learned another language and do not know about that, either.

There are hundreds of thousands of children in the US that speak no English and were born here.
They speak what their parents speak.

No matter where people are born, they normally grow up speaking the language of their parents. No one automagically learns English just because they were born here.

If their parents are bilingual, they will grow up bilingual, but this is relatively rare. My daughter was brought up speaking Spanish and English, but many of her friends whose parents were bilingual did not manage to do this.

Americans have fewer children than they otherwise might because of financial uncertainty and a feeling that there is insufficient job security. These are among the most common reasons. There are many reasons, of course.

When contraceptives became available, almost immediately the birth rate dropped.  About 17 to 20 years after that, the crime rate plummeted. There is a clear connection: unwanted children more often become misfits, and misfits more often become criminals. If you ban abortions, it will affect primarily the poorest people, and the result will be a higher crime rate and an increase in poverty than would have otherwise occurred.

I can't be sure that is true , but even if it is, Is it better to put up with a few percent more crimes or kill all the potential criminals?

    I didn't think this a common problem , perhaps I am wrong.
