Washington, Jefferson and FDR

Washington for not crowning himself king or serving until he died.
Jefferson for his vision for the country, and the Louisiana Purchase.
FDR for confronting the Great Depression and WWII, despite his severe handicaps.

But really, it is not possible to compare different people in different times in a fair manner.
We can more easily compare how they met similar challenges.

Washington, of course.

John Quincy Adams, who won the 1824 election in the House of Representatives but felt constrained by the fact that he won with no clear majority and thus made few policy initiatives. In addition, the majority of the country, and the Congress, opposed him, and blocked him at every turn. He was voted out after one term and became known as a 'do nothing' president.

William Henry Harrison died of illness one month after taking office.

Washington was great for his accomplishments; the other two for their lack thereof. At least they didn't screw anything up.

From Wikipedia, an old joke about Calvin Coolidge when he was President … The President and Mrs. Coolidge were being shown (separately) around an experimental government farm. When [Mrs. Coolidge] came to the chicken yard she noticed that a rooster was mating very frequently. She asked the attendant how often that happened and was told, "Dozens of times each day." Mrs. Coolidge said, "Tell that to the President when he comes by." Upon being told, the President asked, "Same hen every time?" The reply was, "Oh, no, Mr. President, a different hen every time." President: "Tell that to Mrs. Coolidge."

—?The joke appears in a 1978 book (A New Look at Love, by Elaine Hatfield and G. William Walster, p. 75), citing an earlier source

Reagan liked Coolidge.

Coolidge was noted for not doing diddly.
In 1927, half of Louisiana was washed away and Coolidge did nothing other than to pay a visit and say how bad it all looked. No offers to help, nothing.

Coolidge is not far from ideal , if your ideal is a government that stays out of your hair.

There is a necessary role of government , and a lot of optional features.

Then there is the attitude that anything that the government can do it should do.

Coolidge was a good president , but did not lead us into war nor a major change in our way of life, so he is not likely to be called a great president.

Might be nice to have a few years without the need of drastic governing and great presidents.

Coolidge was a terrible president. The stock market crashed because they were allowing people to buy stocks on a tiny margin. Coolidge acted as thought the government has no business to intrude, and the was demonstrably wrong. He was president during the period when it was obvious that Prohibition could never work and was making lawbreakers of maybe a third of the population. Coolidge did nothing, said nothing. When he too a trip to visit Cuban dictator Machado and lie to him about how the US was no longer to fuck around in Latin American politics, his staff brought gallons and gallons of booze back on his ship. There was a horrible flood in Louisiana in 1927 and Coolidge did not oner goodamend thing to help the people who actually starved as a result.

Coolidge was no hero, he was an incompetent dolt.
