They do well in sun or shade. They are ideal for planting nearby piowerlines as they usually do not grow tall enough to have to be trimmed by the power companies.

I learned that when i negotiated a deal with the power company to have a moratorium on clear cutting on right of ways to give homeowners a chance to plant lower growing greenery.

Strange behavior for a Bush loving conservative polluter eh?  Stereotypes are a bitch!

Oh right Bt. I bet you got a good kickback from a local privately operated greenhouse too, didn't you? What are you getting? 10%? 15%, per dogwood?

You Bush lovers are all the same ;)

(that was a joke, if you couldn't tell)

Redbuds also make a really good smaller tree that grow roughly the same height as a dogwood and are also native. Belive it or not, it is best to plant in the late Fall.

this is a good direction were heading this thread
I`ve been thinking of researching what trees that don`t grow tall
seriously my city can`t pick tree to save it life
the tree they put in front of my brothers house tore up the waterline and the overhead  every other year.
and claims it wasn`t supposed to grow that tall.
and left the bill for him to pay
and he`s not allowed to cut it down
total B.S.
he had the sell that house to not deal with that nonsense anymore
this is why I`ll never let them plant anything in front of my house ever
I`m thinking to recommend tree`s for them to try.
P.S. that tree is still there right now

Kimba there is a profession known as Forestry with a specialisation of "urban forestry." You might find some help there. Those people should know a good deal about what to plant and where to avoid just what you are talking about. Also, major universities should have a program like that, or perhaps someone like an ornamental horticulturalist or landscape architect would also be well qualified to provide more of an expert opinion.

what are they?
seriously I want to know this city got a ton of trees and I doubt they`re all gonna behaive and only grow 15ft. and stop.
I  know I will hear from my block about these damn trees.
I question our forestry people abilty to pick them.
we got eucalyptist in goldengate park
talk about stupid
that tree has destroyed so many homes in berkely hills
it`s the west coast version of kudzu
but that more flamable.
5 years ago I saw one cut a car in half from a wind strom
those shallow roots are not very stable

what are they?

Well, there is this stuff - drill some holes and pour it in, it'll kill the tree.

Damage the roots below the soil line to attract termites to the tree, they'll kill it.

There are a number of ways.

but problems that prevents us from trying this is we think the city is lame enough to say we`re resposible for that tree so we`re gonna have to replace it or something.
but i gotta tell you
the root thing sounds like a great idea
termites is pretty much act of god
isn`t it?

If I'm responsible for it, then I can make the decision to remove it. If I'm prevented from removing it, and I don't want to deal with it, then someone else needs to be responsible.

Hitting it repeatedly with a tow truck will take care of it as well. And if no one saw the tow truck on that dark, moonless night, who are they gonna charge?

Is there a tree whose leaves would make suitable TP for Cheril Crow?

The good news Kimba, is that whatever trees you can get planted, you can then claim them as carbon offsets, and subsequently invest in either a Hummer, or just run your thermostat at 70degrees all summer, and not feel a bit of guilt      8)

Believe it or not your power or phone company will have a list suitable for your area. It costs them a fortune to maintain right of ways and they are more than glad to give landscaping advice. Most power companies have arborists on staff.

I think my city ignore the power companies advices
because I`ve seen some pretty big trees here.
I think they follow asthetics more than safety in my city.
