He tells Americans we should turn the crisis of the current big Detroit 3 pig mobiles -----He's come up with a new and  innovative idea'!!!

MM: Hey, let's change the focus from poor pissy autos into more white knuckle bus transportation magic......... and better yet......build MORE subways!?
 ::)

One flame into another frying pan. Geez

I can just see New Mexicans willing to build down under ground.

I don't particularly care for Michael Moore, but more public transportation is what America needs.

Public is one thing....digging in the dirt for more underground rails is another. I just didn't like the way he spilled out the path to a new world of transportation with such a flippant care free remark.

We need to join forces and make noises in terms of energy.....we will have to revisit the way we produce our transports.

I just don't agree with subways as the answer.

Subways are fine for urban areas.

They aren't practical for suburban and exurban dwellers.

What makes a good transition?

A train station with a large parking lot ?

If you drive into town your car becomes a liability because you have to pay so much to park it.

Subways are useful where the water table is low and the cost of real estate makes it too expensive to build new dedicated urban rail lines above ground. In Mexico City, much of the Metro is above ground because much of the city is floating on the ooze of a muddy lake bottom.

The best way to provide economical and rapid transit to the suburbs is light rail, which is what you see in Madrid, Paris, London, Moscow, Vienna Budapest and other European cities.

You can get from anywhere in Paris to almost anywhere else in Paris for about 80 cents and in under an hour.

This is true. I have traveled on one of those light rails in Europe.

You try to build underground in New Mexico...and it's a given that you will have to fight land owners-------most of those are Native Americans.

Light rail.....between my house and my work place? That's where the waste is .....the light travel via auto between Mickydees and the home front. Let's just walk.

If it's close enough, why not ride a bike, or maybe a motor scooter?

Light rail makes sense in some situations. Atlanta to Macon then Dublin -Stateboro -Savannah or Columbus- Albany- Americus would be a good route.

Chattanooga - Dalton - Gainesville- Athens- Atlanta would be another.

Atlanta Carrollton Birmingham might make sense.

The key is creating jobs where the people are and not just retail malls.

Telecommuting has been my option since the days of dial up 1200 baud modems.

I always take the subway to downtown and often to the airport.

Mainly because it is quicker than dealing with parking and traffic.

It's not that close, but if it were, I would.
Just this evening I witnessed a bike accident. A woman whom I have watched gliding her motor bicycle to and from work on the very path I travel via auto was hit!! I am so worried about her. She was in the ditch surrounded by citizens who kindly helped her up.....then there were the sounds of the oncoming fire truck and ambulance headed to her rescue.
sadly, in all honesty.....for a few months now,  I've wondered when she would "go down"...
I am not being negative about her choice to change the way we travel and save the earth, but I have to admit, I have been concerned. Her bike was motorized. It was quite something to watch her travel on her motorized bicycle down the country road. Such a cute figure. Such a sign of the new times. She road proudly and like the wind.  She wore a yellow jacket all summer, but recently changed over to a black jacket. I had a bad feeling this morning as we crossed paths once again for the umpteeth time. She didn't seem to be prepared for the darkness.

Sure enough....not good news. If there was some way I could find out what happened to her. ...:(

Drivers are "assholes" in this city. The do not tolerate the bicyclists.

Ok, so ....
I say build an auto that can keep the air clean. We can't walk to work in this nation. We just can not. So, the only thing I see is to build a car that will reduce the pollution problem.

In the meantime, I hope to someday reduce my own need for traveling to perhaps twice a week....When I retire.

There has to be a way to solve this other than building underground rails.

Here in Warner Robins and the county around it ,the roads are very poorly laid out for Bycyclists . bike paths are rare and do not connect.

If planned more for bike sfety there would be more room for bikes to move safely.

Dedicated above ground rail transportation is the most efficient way to commute in most suburbs.

I was very impressed by the bus system on Oahu. The buses are comfortable, plentiful and fairly cheap: $2.00 fare to anywhere on the island. If you show them your medicare card, then the fare is just $1.00 (for those over 65). Some of the busses are double sized and bend in the middle.  But they are slow. They are planning a rail system that is supposed to improve commuting time. The entire rim of the island is heavily populated. Most of the interior of the island is mountainous. The climate is very pleasant. The local saying is "you lucky you live Hawai'i". Drivers are a lot more courteous than in South Florida. Not nearly so many huge SUVs and trucks.

My sister says that you need a car to get around on the Big Island and Maui.
