The GOP was dealt an embarrassment today with the revelation the National Republican Senatorial Committee solicited actors with a "'hicky' blue collar look" to appear in a West Virginia campaign spot. While the ad was pulled, confusion over the request lingered on Twitter.

These characters are from West Virginia so think coal miner/trucker looks... Clothing Suggestions” included jeans, work boots, flannel shirt, denim shirt, “Dickie’s type jacket with t-shirt underneath,” down-filled vest, “John Deer [sic] hats (not brand new, preferably beat up),” “trucker hats (not brand new, preferably beat up),” - the casting call for the now infamous GOP ad that aired briefly in West Virginia.
Why not the more economical: someone who looks like he's clinging to his guns and religion?
http://andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com/the_daily_dish/2010/10/how-the-gop-sees-west-virginians.html7.45am: More facts: when the National Republican Senatorial Committee wants to shoot an ad for West Virginia, it goes to subcontractors who put out a casting call for actors that says they are "going for a 'Hicky' Blue Collar look ... These characters are from West Virginia."Now I know, they do look a lot like actors. I don't know if I will ever trust a political ad again. Damn you, National Republican Senatorial Committee's subcontractors.
Update: the NRSC has yanked the ad as a result. Shame.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/richard-adams-blog/2010/oct/07/us-midterm-elections-2010-live-blogCandidates rarely want to draw attention to the commercials made on behalf of their opponents. But this year’s West Virginia Senate race is an exception.
Joe Manchin, the state’s Democratic governor and candidate for Senate, has condemned an ad made to benefit his Republican opponent, businessman John Raese, in which the production company said it was looking for “hicky” actors to portray real West Virginia voters.
