Of course the Muslims feel inferior. They KNOW they are inferior, but, like Bob Jones graduates, who also know down ijnside that they are inferior, they tell themselves that God is on their side.

It does not benefit anyone to burn Korans. It is even worse when it becomes public. It is rather like burning a cross.

If a life can be saved by an apology, then an apology is clearly in order.

and if that apology actually emboldened those radicals to commit even worse acts, and led to the killing of Americans (such as...lets say...2 soldiers), then .....not so much in order.  Arguably clearly not

So......weren't these prisoners writing notes and plans in their Korans, and DESECRATING them to begin with before they were taken away and burnt??  Where's that outrage??

Muslims killed in America "in revenge" for for the religiously-motivated
mass murder of 2,997 innocent people on Sept 11?

1 in ten years.

Americans killed in Afghanistan "in revenge" for the
accidental burning of a few Qurans?

5 in the first week.

====================================================
So what proof is there of this? If you see a book written in Pashto or Dari in the Arabic alphabet with writing in the margins who are you to say it was "desecrated"?

The fact is that publicly burning these Korans and other writings was stupid. It deserved an apology. It was clearly the wrong thing to do.

It's why they were confiscated in the 1st place.....d'uh.  I was listening to some Islamic clerics, and indeed, one is NOT to write in it, what-so-ever.  It's not a criminal offense, but it is absolutely desecration of the Koran, as one is not supposed to, in any way, change the meaning of what their God is trying to command

You actually believe that Korans were rounded up by the military, just for the hell of it??

What the frell??  What tactic are you now so wrong in??  One that requires a special lunatic liberal decoder ring?    :o

I just looked it up and it`s under investigation at the moment why the books are being burned to begin with . but it`s pretty mush SOP for those in charge to apoligize for such incident anyway.

Remember these are leaders and this is one of the required duties.

As a "required duty" for the POTUS, here's my 2 cents Kimba.....I'll concede the "need" for an apology, but what needed to be done, simultaneously, is a "surge" if you will, of increased military presence & intervention, in fulfilling the current objectives, that has them there in the 1st place.  The apology to placate the PC crowd, but with the added effort, if not a doubling effort, to let the Islamic radicals know that the apology should not be seen as a sign of weakness.

The former, without the latter, provided precisely that, I'm afraid, and likely has led to MORE deaths, not less, as erroneously opined by the quote "If a life can be saved by an apology, then an apology is clearly in order."

With the benefit of hindsight, I don't see that the apolgy from our highest level helped us much.

But it was worth a try, I am not mad at Obama for attempting to quell and soothe this unfortunate situation.

Now we know , it doesn't help, next time we should bow up a bit and tell them all, it is not our shame , but yours!!

Sirs recommended a surge in conjunction with the apology.

Dear Sirs

We are fucking a dog in Afghanistan. We are trying to get our paratrooper, leg infantry, and Marine fighting units out of there. We'll leave some Special Forces, Seal, and other special operating units there with some infantry to protect them. A surge is the last thing on any of the commander's minds.  The thrust of the program put into place by Obama and the pentagon was to assassinate as many Al Qaeda, and high ranking Taliban, as possible. They've done well in that regard. That program will continue as the major fighting units leave, and into the foreseeable future.

Your buddy, BSB

Being as the purpose of the apology was to defuse the situation and prevent more attacks on NATO troops, and being as we have no way of ascertaining what was prevented, it is not possible to say that the apology was "unsuccessful".

It was clearly the proper response to a stupid mistake.

And no, a surge is hardly what we need right now. What we need is to get out of Afghanistan.
