The Egyptian people elected Morsi. He probably still has more support than any other political figure in Egypt. If the US withdraws aid from Egypt, Egypt will be much harder to deal with, and Israel will have major problems.

Suppose the Egyptians get so pissed they overthrow Morsi and put someone more radical in power. Then Egypt cancels its treaty with Israel and Israel bombs Aswan and pretty much exterminates Egypt.

Imagine how hard that mess would be to clean up. Guess who would be funding the rebuilding of Egypt. Guess who would get the blame in addition to the Israelis.

The US has no alternative but to support Morsi and help him restore stability in Egypt, which desperately needs to get its tourism industry revenues back to where they were in the times of Mubarak. An Egypt that is stable will be better able to support itself, and will require less aid and will be less likely to attack Israel, as a large number of tourists to Egypt are Israelis, who want to track down the adventures of Moses and such.

What do were get if we cut off aid to Egypt?

Making CU4 happy is hardly a worthwhile foreign policy objective.

It is good for the US to give aid to Egypt. The US does not give aid that is detrimental to its interests, at least not knowingly so.

The Egyptians do not have to accept it.

I don't think that Egypt gets the same sort of aid from the US as do Kenya and other Subsaharan countries. Not all of our aid is detrimental, but some of it clearly is poorly thought out, as your article suggests.

The people of Egypt do not have any sense of gratitude to the Americans for the aid we send. They do not request aid, nor is the aid seen as being to their benefit.

The US, along with others in the UN, helped move hundreds of ancient statues and buildings along the Nile to higher ground when the Aswan Dam was built and would have flooded Luxor and other ancient sites. These attract tourists, and tourists provide jobs for Egyptians. Our aid has kept Egypt stable, and has prevented war with Israel, which Egypt could have won, had they done it before Aswan was built.

Now Egypt cannot depend on a victory, since the entire country could be devastated with one bomb at the dam site.
