Obviously somebady that eat mostly meat will have a shorter life, but what about somebody with a fairely mixed diet?

Rememer the extemely large majority of people over the age of a hundred has meat in thier diet. I don't recall vegans talking about any of thier member making it to that exclusive club.

Kimba...I have more recently jumped on the "Wheat-Belly" philosophy as far as diet.
The wheat-belly philosophy thinks wheat is the "bad guy", not meat.
A slice or 2 of bread raises the glycemic index as much as a Snickers bar.
And wheat is in almost everything in our grocery stores.
I can tell you it is EXTREMELY difficult to escape wheat!

It is pretty easy to investigate these claims, since Seventh-Day Adventists are vegetarians, as are many Hindus. Diet is just one factor of longevity: genetics are also very influential, as is exercise.

The anti-wheat crowd claims that wheat is not genetically altered and is not the same as wheat people used to eat 100 years ago. Corn syrup sweeteners and consumption of soft drinks sweetened with them are probably more influential than wheat.

Food is certainly more addictive than crack, not just wheat.

I would say that the best available information on diet is Dr. Fuhrman, who has a website.

The anti-wheat crowd states wheat is genetically altered and it is not the same wheat.

While sodas and sweets certainly raise a person's glycemic  index, that's the whole point
about the wheat belly philosophy....that people tend to think eating wheat is "ok" compared
to eating "sweets" when wheat actually raises a glycemic index as much or more than sweets.

The point is.......sweets and wheat are BOTH bad.
Eating Ritz crackers (wheat) is just as bad as eating a Milky Way. (refined sugar)

Diets are frequently faddish. There is a near infinite variety of foods, and a balance is more important as I see it than rapidly focusing on one thing you should eat or should not eat.

Wheatbelly sounds like just another fad to me.

Another current fad seems to be krill oil. It is pretty clear that humans were not designed to eat krill, because we are not and never  been marine creatures, but that does not make it a bad food. Before I would spend a lot of money on krill oil supplements, I would look for a valid test comparing krill oil with flaxseed oil and other omega 3 type supplements.

Until  then, the best answer question "Should I take krill oil?" is "It depends on whether your krill are squeaking."

Diets are frequently faddish.

Mainly because the addiction to a poor diet is stronger and wins the day.

Poor choices in food intake is killing us and costing billions in medical resources.

However because something is considered "faddish" (temporary popular)
does not make it any less true or less factually correct.....it can just mean that
people do not have the will-power to overcome their addiction to unhealthy
food choices...and then the sheep move on to the next "cure" hoping it may
make the withdrawl easier.....

it goes back to the old  Buddhist statement:
"All know the way.....few actually walk it"

we all pretty much know what is killing us....but few do much about it.

Food is not killing anyone. If you don't eat at all;, that would kill you.

Some diets are healthier than others. Focusing on just one thing, wheat, sugar, eggs, dairy is faddish.

The optimum diet is more complicated than focusing on just one or two things.

Even the old bit about grazing only the outside s of the supermarket or avoiding all white foods seems be better advice.

Food is not killing anyone.

You sound like cigarette advocates in the 1950's and 1960's.

Food....the wrong foods.....are most definitely killing people and causing enormous health problems.

We have an obesity and diabetes epidemic primarily caused by eating and consuming too much of the wrong kinds of food.

In 1972 U.S. consumers spent 3 billion dollars a year on fast food....today we spend more than $110 billion.....and we wonder why obesity and diabetes has skyrocketed?

What we eat is killing us!

I pretty much TRY to eat what taste good. I find ALOT of the food today not that satifying in the taste dept. Thats kinda sad since I have very bland taste. It`s real hard for me to find a pizza that taste good to me.

I don't deny that a better diet will contribute to one's longevity. Perhaps genetically altered wheat is indeed bad for us as well. But I think it is excessive to say that it is killing is. Nutrition is more complicated than just one food or type of food.

I would say that Dr Joel Fuhrman makes more sense than most.

http://www.drfuhrman.com/

As for the idea that good food tastes good and bad food tastes bad, that is too simplistic. With technology we can make really non-nutricious food taste terrific. My personal view point is that the right type of cheese can make any bland food taste great, but cheese is certainly not something we should eat a lot of, being as it is largely fat.

hmm
I think sugar and stuff like cheese has made us bypass how we normally choose to eat.
I tried to find a granola without some kind of sweetener ex. chocolate chip. I`m still looking.

I`m almost think our flavor preference maybe off. way too many things has strong flavor
my company x-mas part had pumpkin mash potatoes. I wished it was plain so I can enjoy the flavor of the turkey better.
sometimes we blands for contrast taste

There is in wheat a protean called gluten, it is delicious, but difficult to digest , allergy to gluten is a serious health problem and not really rare.

How do people who are not allergic tolerate gluten?

Some seem to tolerate it poorly even without the allergy.

Perhaps we need more symbiotic bacteria , if the bacteria break something down in our gut , we can then digest the simpler compounds, at the price of a little gas.

This is just a theroy , but part of the problem might be antibiotics that supress some peoples helpfull intestinal flora too much.

Plane they don't. Diet plays an enormous role in our over-all health.
I believe we are all basically wheat intolerant....just some more than others.
Sure most of us can eat wheat and see no immediate problems
but a long term diet high in processed foods with wheat (American diet) is a health disaster!
