These guys were Taliban, not Al Qaeda

Which changes absolutely nothing to the point already made

were arrested 12 years ago on suspicion and held against th4eor will with no trial.

Pretty much every enemy soldier or combatant is held that way, since we started taking prisoners in a war situation

Now they are 12 years older and will be supervised by Qatar and there are always surveillance drones.

Riiiiiight.  And you bought that?

It is important to bring all POWs home, and probably this will prove to be a wise choice.

Too bad Ambassador Stevens and our other 3 Americans in Benghazi weren't offered the same opportunity, before they could even became POW's

And yet two wars are mostly over

And AlQeeda now almost fully reformed & rearmed, Taliban now with complete freedom of movement

and the Stock market is at a record high.

LOL...and when it was high under Bush, the same folks were decrying how this was proof positive how under Bush, the wealthy were just getting wealthier, and the poor were getting screwed.  Amazing the rhetorical sommersaults performed when its one of their guys in the seat of power

I did not say that. You tell me I am somehow a hypocrite because of something someone else said?

Did I say YOU did?  I said the same folks who are touting the stock market now, as a mark of "success" under Obama were condeming it under Bush.  If you happen to be one of those "folks", then the hose is on you

I imagine that soldiers were sent on patrol and told to look for this guy in addition to their main assignment. That would be the proper thing to do. But I do not see how you can fault the guy who wandered off for anything other than wandering off.  That is going AWOL, and is pretty serious business.

We still see POW/MIA flags left over from Vietnam. At least we won't be seeing those for the wars President Obama ended.

We should have left ending Vietnam up to George McGovern instead of that snake, Nixon.

You can imagine all you want.  The FACT is that when this fella went missing (deserted), soliders were ordered to venture into far more dangerous areas than they would have, and now we're up to 14 who died looking for this deserter

And no, he didn't just "wander off", he deserted his platoon and his country, apparently looking to join the Taliban, and this led up to 14 deaths of Americans that wouldn't have happened, had they not had to look for him.

FEINSTEIN SLAMS "UNILATERAL" OBAMA FOR BERGDAHL DEAL

Sen Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), who chairs the Senate Intelligence Committee, offered sharp criticism of the Obama administration Tuesday, saying that it was "very disappointing" that the White House had not consulted with Congress 30 days prior to trading five Taliban leaders for alleged deserter Bowe Bergdahl, as required by law.

"The White House is pretty unilateral about what they want to do when they want to do it," she said, adding that her whole committee was "very dismayed" about the administration's actions.

Feinstein was speaking to reporters in the Capitol, and revealed that the White House offered her a personal apology for the "oversight" of not having notified her in advance. The apology came from Deputy National Security Advisor Tony Blinken, the National Journal reports.

This is a difficult one for me.

If Mr. Bergdahl is guilty of something , he can be accused and tried now. No this is not likely, as no one really wants to prosecute, if this guy wants to be Taliban he wont have much trouble getting a ticket back. If he wants to be a citizen of the US he will be fighting his reputation , but people have had it worse.

Those five Talib prisoners were cheap to give up. We weren't planning to execute or even try them were we? So we were going to release them at some point, a years probation is a meager fig leaf, but the next five we let go won't even have that.

President Obama isn't benefiting a lot , as usual, those who like him are gushing with praise of this rescue and those who don't are concentrating on the illegality.

So all in all I think I approve of the deal that the president made, I have reservations, but on the balance I see more positive in getting an American free, than in detaining prisoners of war past the end of our real involvement.

Yes , the administration deserves this criticism, as it has several times before, it is a part of this White House style.

The President is the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces. He has an obligation to see to it that all servicemen are brought home.

If this soldier was AWOL or committed infractions, then he should be court martialed.

There are STILL POW/MIA flags left over from Vietnam still  fluttering in the breeze here. President Obama has managed to do what Presidents Nixon and Ford could not do: bring them all home.

As for the Taliban, they are not POWs because we were never at war with the Taliban or Afghanistan. If they are criminals, then they deserved a swift trial. The coursts have already said that Guantanamo detentions are unconstitutional. They have been held without trial or charges for 12 years.

]The moronic 'baggers continue to support making it in=mpossible to close Guantanamo, and at the same time calling the President incompetent for not closing it.

His obligation is to protect this country.  Sending 5 high ranking leaders of the terrorists currently at war with us doesn't make us safer....quite the contrary. (yes, we are at war with the Taliban as well, considering the drones and military intervention we're still currently performing against them.  Obama himself made that cyrstal clear when he ran for President, stating how we're supposedly fighting in the wrong country, that we should have completely focused on Afghanistan)  We could have just sent them $$$$, we appear print that like there's no tomorrow, and screw what that does to our economy......if he was that vital to have returned to us

And don't even try to pull the Gitmo card.  Obama could have closed that with the stroke of his pen, as soon as he took office.  That's not incompetence, that's called failed leadership, and yet another lie to add to his growing fabrication resume'
