Who claimed we're in danger of Nazis??  This literal card tactic you like to play gets acutely tiring.  Good thing we're all up to the task of dealing with it

This is not 1939. the country is not threatened with attack from any other country.

You might as well be nattering about a leprosy epidemic, or a return of the Bubonic plague.

It is pretty clear that one has won the argun=mewnt when the other side starts talking about the dangers of Nazis.

The sleeper still sleeps.

Nazis are a fantasy to you ?

You suppose that we spend too much on defense.

This can certainly be argued with data from the real world.

In 1939 we did not spend enough, this is demonstrable.

What makes you think that we are spending enough , let alone too much.

Is it your opinion that Nazis are aberrant ?  That nothing like them can arise from humanity again?

There are no Nazis anywhere on any horizon. We might as well prepare for an invasion of Huns, Mongols or Visigoths.

In other words, you can't point to anyone claiming an impending nazi attack.  Didn't think so

What  Huns, Mongols, Visigoths and Nazis have in common with Isis is that they are all human beings with lots of ambition to expand with military conquest.

Matter of fact I may have a few ancestors with this quality.

What makes a person feel safe from human beings?

Ignorance of history?

There is no reason to prepare for invasions by massive armies unless there are some massive armies threatening us.
It is always better to build what is needed when there is a need, using the best current technology.
Otherwise you end up building another Maginot Line.

You confuse being prepared with preparing for invasion.  Preparing for invasion would mandate a deploying of forces to those locations we're expecting an invasion.  It's like having an loaded firearm in your house, while you're at home, vs standing behind a couch with your weapon drawn and pointed at the front door

It is ALWAYS better to be prepared for the worst, but it never happen, then not be prepared if it did.  You simply swap out the tools as technology advances

One of the biggest Armies on earth is in China.

And when they hold war games , the "enemy" is usually US.

China is uninterested in conquest. It is interested in commercial advantage and of course, keeping the current regime in power.
The US could not win a war against China in Asia, and China could not defeat the US with an invasion. China would strategically be better off conquering Siberia: fewer people more resources, less resistance.

We might as well build up our military to defend from Space Aliens. Yeah, that's the ticket. Invaders from space.
Have you noticed how many hostile alien invader films there have been lately?

You have no fricken clue what interests China has, as it relates to conquest.  Space aliens isn't a reality.  A growing communist force in either China or Russia, with the added wrinkle of how much China owns of American stock & businesses, IS a reality.  No one here is claiming we need to stand behind the couch with a loaded bazooka aimed at the door, or the Army deployed along the east & west coast.  Merely be prepared for the possibility.....and pray it never comes to that

What , you have not heard of this?

Territory that is closer to the Philippines and territory that is closer to Japan is being turned into real land by building islands on shallows.

China has never at all been a great sea power , nor ever before had settlements on these islands.

This is a peculiar land grab in that they are not so much grabbing the land as they are creating it.

But it is totally a sea grab in that the rights to control and fish a lot of ocean exclusively is important to these three protein hungry countries.

It is also probably an oil field grab, there is very likely a big oil field in this disputed region.

Explain to me why the Chinese taking over some desolate treeless islands in the South China Sea is worth fighting over.
No one should have to risk his life defending the Spratly Islands. The one thing that is 100% clear is that  the US has no claim to to these at all.

The US would sure as Hell be drilling on islands around it if there were any oil there, so why should China be banned from drilling?
No one else is going to do it.

Millions of tons of food.

Alternately, the deletion from the gene pool of dozens of species.

These reefs are being ruined for fish, but the fish that remain will be devoted to China.

It is definitely important .

What on Earth do you mean "the reefs are being ruined for fish?"
This is just about some wacko ego trip in Washington. These islands are unimportant.
They will continue to be surrounded by fish.

The US spent FIVE BILLION DOLLARS trying to cause Ukraine to split from Russia. Many dead Ukrainians later, we see the results.

It is of no concern to nearly everyone in the US who controls the Spratlys or what sort of mess the Ukrainians are in. It is pretty obvious that since 1991, The Ukraines have been unable to actually run their country. Ukrainians is not really a language, it is one of many Slavic dialects, but the pro-Western Ukrainians have made it some sort of major patriotic symbol. And many of them are pro-Western because they have been bought off by the US and the =Europeans. The Russians have done the same thing on the Eastern end of the country. Russia is much better off than Ukraine. We cannot blame Russian speakers in the Eastern part for wanting to be Russians governed by Russians.

Crimea was historically never a part of Ukraine, either. The people have never been majority Ukrainian.
I am no fan of Putin, but facts are facts.

It has been a waste of my money. Defending the Spratleys with more than sharp words will also be a waste of my money.

No.

For the fish this is extinction.

You can't cover an entire reef with a thick layer of sand and expect it to continue to operate as a habitat for the reef fish.

Far fewer fish can live there now, ironic indeed that access to plenty of fish was one of the reasons to make this peculiar land grab.
