New York Times Gave MoveOn.org Discount for 'Betray Us' Ad
Thursday, September 13, 2007

By Charles Hurt - New York Post

WASHINGTON:  The New York Times dramatically slashed its normal rates for a full-page advertisement for
MoveOn.org's ad questioning the integrity of Gen. David Petraeus, the commander of U.S. forces in Iraq.

Headlined "Cooking the Books for the White House," the ad that ran in Monday's Times says Petraeus is
"a military man constantly at war with the facts" and concluded -- even before he testified before Congress --
that "General Petraeus is likely to become General Betray Us."

According to Abbe Serphos, director of public relations for the Times, "the open rate for an ad of that size
and type is $181,692."

A spokesman for MoveOn.org confirmed to The Post that the liberal activist group had paid only $65,000 for
the ad - a reduction of more than $116,000 from the stated rate.

A Post reporter who called the Times advertising department yesterday without identifying himself was
quoted a price of $167,000 for a full-page black-and-white ad on a Monday.

Serphos declined to confirm the price and refused to offer any inkling for why the paper would
give MoveOn.org such a discounted price.

Citing the shared liberal bent of the group and the Times, one Republican aide on Capitol Hill
speculated that it was the "family discount."

"I'm surprised they had to pay anything at all for the ad," the GOP staffer said. "They could have just
asked the editorial page to run it and it wouldn't have cost them a cent."

It's my understanding that Rudy Giuliani is going to place the same size ad and demand the same discount. think he'll get it?

Is the New York Times a private entity or isn'[t it?

Next you will expect Oprah to put your ugly mugs on the cover of O magazine for free.

Giulani has the right to print his own newspaper. At least until Clear Channel gives equal time to Al Gore.

Why am I not surprised a good little socialist like yourself has no clue what the ramifications of such a business move could be.

Is the NYTimes a supposedly non-biased objective media outlet or not??

Bias in reporting the news is hardly the same thing as bias in selling advertising.

Go now, and worship Murdoch.

Obviously he requires some education.

It's really simply XO. For example, Revlon pays the standard rate for a full page ad, $160,000+. Revlon hears about the HUGE discount given to the Moveon.com scumbags. Revlon demands the same rate or promises to take it's business elswhere. Other advertisers demand the same. Bad for the Times.

Good for the country.

ROTFLMFAO.  Now there's a man who really understands the inner workings of the capitalist system he worships.  Yeah, that'll happen.  Just, don't hold your breath waiting for it.

ooops, missed it.  Well, shit, can't be expected to know EVERYTHING.   Guess Revlon's a lot dumber than I would have thought.

Well, it's a great opportunity for some suppliers to move in on whatever demographic Revlon was reaching through the NYT and grab themselves some new market share.

It's also possible the NYT is dumber than I thought and failed to conceal what should have been concealed.  Bad move on their part.  But since they gave so much aid and comfort to the Bush campaign for war with Iraq (through the Judith Miller series of bullshit stories pushing the WMD fantasies) it's kind of poetic justice that they are being kicked in the ass by the same war-loving fascists that they lied their asses off for.  Couldn't have happened to a more deserving bunch of people.

Yeah, breaking election laws is always a bad move, on the part of any entity.

Somehow, I doubt that Revlon's decision is likely to ruin the Times.

I continue to insist that the NYT has a perfect right to sell ad space at whatever price they wish. Political ads are not the same as ads for cosmetics.
You have a right to let one neighbor's schnauzer frolic about on your lawn and plug a cap into another neighbor's sh*tting Rotweiler, as it were, because it's private property and it belongs to you.

Petreus is not running for office. This may be a political ad, but it is not about any campaign, and therefore election laws don't apply.
